Definition of Counselling/ Helping Profession. According to the Counselling Psychology Study Guide (page 2), counselling is a thorough use of the bond between the helper and the client in order to create alterations in their cognitive processes, emotions and acts of that client. Counselling is the use of skills and training to create a relationship with ones client in order to allow for the client to form insight into their lives, accepting their feelings as their own and allowing for growth to occur. It is the aim of the helper to create a state in which the client can perform more contently and with their own self. Helping consists of four parts, those being; (1) an individual seeking help, (2) an individual that is willing to help those seeking help, (3) the helping individual is competent and skilled enough to train, and (4) an environment that is conducive for help to be given and received. Counselling is collaboration of steps that is aimed to help clients cope better and learn to deal with situations that they are facing.
