Throughout this essay I will be explaining and exploring the benefits of counselling to young people, and how individuals can benefit from attending counselling sessions with myself. In the UK a child/ young person is generally anyone under the age of 17 years old. Children and Young People's Counselling is for any young person who is having problems, within any aspect of their lives. Problems can include anything from mental health concerns, or problems with friendship groups, school or parents (Relate: 2017: Children and Young People's Counselling.) Counselling sessions will allow the young person to discuss their feelings and issues within a supportive and non-judgmental environment. Counselling gives the young person the opportunity to talk about how they feel within a safe environment. It is sometimes very difficult to talk to those closest to us in fear of upsetting them. That is why talking to someone experienced who is not emotionally involved and who is trained to hear you without judging or giving advice can really make a difference. Speaking to a counsellor away from their social circle, family and school can take away some of the pressure associated with talking about their problems. A referral will generally come from a parent (especially if the young person is under the age of 16.) This means it is important for the counsellor to develop rapport with the client and the parent to some extent, as this will encourage the parent to be more supportive throughout the process. There can also be a use for family sessions, where the parent is brought into the counselling session. This however should only be done if the counsellor feels confident it will help, and the child is happy for this to happen, (Brighton Therapy Partnership:
