Careers in Sports and Physical Education There are many of the careers that fall under the category of sports and physical education. These careers are very important because they take up a large portion of our lives. If you like to watch sports broadcasts on the television, you would know that the sports are very important to you, and so, therefore, the careers, associated with sports, are very important. Physical education is also very important for keeping our bodies healthy and our mind and teaching people about the importance of leading a healthy life and exercising and making good life choices so they can be healthy and happy. Some athletes make lots of money, while others are very poor. For some, the sport they play is a financial hardship they have to plan their life around, but for others, they can become very wealthy from playing their sport, and live luxurious lives. The median pay for athletes is $47,710 a year. There is lots of competition for these jobs, as many people want to be professional athletes but very few are skilled enough to have this career. Another career involved with sports and physical education is a Referee. Referees, and the other sports officials, preside over competitive athletic or sporting events to help maintain standards of play. They detect infractions, and decide penalties according to the rules of the game. Referees must have a high school diploma or equivalent to become a referee. Referees and umpires must have a high school diploma in some states, but not others. Some sports have licensing and certification progresses for referees, while some don’t. For example, baseball has a school that the umpires have to go to. Umpires and referees do not make very much. The median pay for them is $25,660, which is less than the national
