This reaction paper is about Ida B Wells. Throughout this paper you will learn about this woman and her achievements. How she fought until the very end, and how she used the press to get what she wanted. Wells was born a slave in 1862 in Mississippi, but this did not stop her or slow her down. After slavery Wells and her mother got a chance to go to school that taught them how to read and write. Growing up in the reconstruction period and living in the cruel Jim Crow south she decided to fight back. Not with her fist but with her pen. Wells became a journalist, agitator, and reformer. She fought against lynching, women’s rights, racial injustice, and much more. Through her pen she was able to write history. The book and the movie highlighted the importance of Ms. Wells gaining the rights to be educated and displaying what she learned through her own words. In 1878 a plague called the yellow fever hit Mississippi like no other. Yellow fever was killing black and whites alike. Described in the video and book. Explained in the book and the video Wells friend Thomas moss was lynched with two other men. These men were basically lynched for owning a successful grocery store. Blacks were shocked that this happened. They were even more shocked that the lynch mob were never charged for the crime. This brought even more pain and anger to Wells. Once again Wells fought back with the pen writing about the injustices of lynching and blaming white clergymen and their parishioners for tolerating lynching. She also wrote, and told fellow black people to move west to get away from the injustices that they faced in the south. Wells had so much power blacks actually picked up their things and moved to city’s like Oklahoma and Chicago places they know nothing
