Would you do whatever it takes to help your society? Well, Harrison Bergeron would, even if it means causing danger. Harrison got taken away by the H-G men because he’s very strong and nobody could control him. He then escaped jail and announced that he wants to take over the government. This is why he is a danger to their society. First off, Harrison got taken away to jail by H-G men. He obviously is dangerous if he went to jail, and it is most likely for being very strong and uncontrollable. According to the short story ”Harrison Bergeron”, it states “… the H-G men took George and Hazel Bergeron’s 14-year-old son, Harrison, away”(1). Harrison also wanted to overthrow the government. Who knows what he would have done if he was in control.
The arrest was protested vigorously by the community. Frederick Douglass, a former slave who had escaped to Massachusetts several years earlier, and abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison spoke forcefully against the arrest. There was a trial, and the attempts to recapture George and return him to Virginia caused considerable agitation in Boston. When the trial judge ruled that Latimer still belonged to his Virginia owner, an African-American minister paid $400 for his release. Although free, George was still extremely poor, working as a barber, paper-hanger and in other odd jobs to support his wife, three sons, and one daughter. 		Lewis Latimer, the youngest child, attended grammar school and was an excellent student who loved to read and draw.
Harrison Bergeron is a short story that has a deep meaning to it. To begin with, the short story Harrison Bergeron was made in 1961 and is written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. The whole short story is set in the far future of 2081. 2081 is a time where everybody is finally equal and when the government finally has full control over everyone. If you aren't equal you would have to wear handicaps to limit your extraordinary strength and smarts. As the story progresses, Harrison Bergeron is trying to send a message about society.
The future entails breakthrough technology and unknown leadership. The harsh rules of the government in, Harrison Bergeron, causes the protagonist, Harrison Bergeron, to come up with the dangerous idea to overthrow the government which leads to the violent behavior of the antagonist Diana Moon Glampers. The author, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., uses character development to show the theme of the harsh government through the eyes of the protagonist, antagonist, and the foil characters Hazel and George Bergeron in this futuristic society.
Black or white, right or wrong we all act in a way which makes us feel good. For example, take a look at Harrison Bergeron he did things that made him feel good and he did them because he was born with these rights but, contract rights were implemented and he broke them. However, Harrison acted in ways that are unethical in this new American society in the year 2081. The laws of Harrison Bergeron were everyone was equal, nobody was smarter than anybody else, nobody was better looking, and everyone had to be physically and mentally equal. These laws were implemented because society was competing against each other and the government wanted people to be equal and stop the madness of competition. In order to be equal people who were good looking and smart had to wear handicaps and Harrison was both of these qualities. Harrison acted towards these laws by breaking out of jail and making a television appearance and declaring himself King. Harrison did this to show people that each individual identifies themselves as one. However, what Harrison did was unethical because he brought misery upon these people.
Harrison Bergeron is a short story that creates many images and feelings while using symbols and themes to critique aspects of our lives. In the story, the future US government implements a mandatory handicap for any citizens who is over their standards of normal. The goal of the program is to make everyone equal in physical capabilities, mental aptitude and even outward appearance. The story is focused around a husband and wife whose son, Harrison, was taken by the government because he is very strong and smart, and therefore too above normal not to be locked up. But, Harrison’s will is too great. He ends up breaking out of prison, and into a TV studio where he appears on TV. There, he removes the government’s equipment off of himself, and a dancer, before beginning to dance beautifully until they are both killed by the authorities. The author uses this story to satire
Throughout the story Kurt Vonnegut uses figurative language in order to explain the extensive thought or pain George is going through. Time to Time bergeron’s “mental handicap” buzzes in his ear “ A buzzer sounded in George's head. His thoughts fled in panic, like bandits from a burglar alarm” (6) this smilie explains how whenever George’s get his mind starts to think more “intelligently” than everyone else the alarm goes off breaking his train of thought until his mind goes blank again. Also Kurt Vonnegut uses figurative language to explain the different sounds and noises george hears “ Sounded like somebody hitting a milk bottle with a ball peen hammer”. Awakening the Zombies “Everybody was finally equal. They were not only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else.” This is a short, but powerful excerpt from the short story Harrison Bergeron. Not only does it make you wonder why everyone is equal, but as well makes you wonder how did everyone become equal? In the short story and the movie, Kurt Vonnegut presents a scary view of human society in the United States in the future, in which United States citizens are all uniform. This then leads to their loss of individuality, and therefore to the absolute deformity of humanness. Both the movie and the short story share these themes, they also have a multitude of other similarities, but also have just as many differences. These differences, irony and the symbolism between the two, are what I will be attempting to explore. The first apparent difference between the movie and the short story is that the short story takes place in 2081. In the story the government regulates everything, not just intelligence, but strength and beauty as well, and handicap people appropriately. The strong are forced to wear bags filled with lead balls; beautiful people are forced to wear masks so others would not feel unequal to them in looks. The overly intelligent are forced to wear radio transmitters in their ears, that are tuned to a government station that constantly bombards them with horrible sounds to scramble their thoughts. In the movie, the year is 2053 and everyone is forced to wear mind-altering headbands that rest on their temples. These headbands electronically modify intelligence, effectively decreasing everyone’s IQ to the desired “average” point. Unlike the story, in the movie, no one wears masks to conceal their looks and some are better looking than other making them unequal in appearance to everyone else. Also the only “weight bags” that are worn, is by one dancer on the television that wore a small ankle weight with no resemblance to the enormous weight bags that are described in the story. Another difference is that in the story Harrison Bergeron had the apparent status of a god among these average people. He was fourteen years old, seven feet tall, athletic, good looking, and a genius.
An impartial society: Utopia or Hell? What would happen to the world if the people were literally equal in every aspect of their lives? In the futuristic short story, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., the world is finally living up to America’s first amendment of everyone being created equal. After the Civil War, George was set free at the age of 10. Once he was free, George set out to get an education. While trying to overcome many frustrating and bitter obstacles, George finally made his way through high school. George went to school until the age of 30, but his age didn’t stop him from finding more education. George tried applying to many colleges and all of those attempts failed. George almost gave up until Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa finally accepted him as a freshman.
Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.
