The woodworkers from the Near East were ancient woodworkers. They used there woodworking skills to build great boats out of wood from the "Anatolian plateau along the Levantine coast." The wood from this plateau was desired so much by armies that invaded that the invading army demanded that the wood be paid as tribute (timberbits).
Woodworking with furniture has come a long ways in the past one hundred and fifty years. It has gone through many different styles. Bench planes have improved because a system of draw pins and tapered screws were added to allow the frog to be drawn down to the base securely. This improvement also helped with the adjustment of the throat opening without having to remove the plane iron. The improvement also gave more support to the cutter (R. Mallet).
The lathe has been improved by a group from the Philips Ergonomics Department. They made a ergonomically improved lathe which helps keep a healthy posture for the lathe operator. The healthy posture can be gained whether the operator is standing or sitting. The operator also has a good view of the work he or she is doing. Hammers have been improved also. The handles onow have grips on them so you can hang on to them better. The top of the hammer can also be rubber or iron (R. Mallet).
Bench planes have improved because there is not a tool out there that is better for shaving the edges of a door, or straightening a corner of a piece of wood that is twisted or warped. Lathes have improved because they are useful in many areas such as cutting, knurling, drilling, metalworking, metal spinning, and wood turning.
