In the movie October Sky produced by Larry Franco, Homer Hickam faces many sacrifices to pursue his dream. Homer lives in a small town, he spends his time with his friends Roy Lee, Odell and a later friend, Quinton. Homer lives in a home where he’s expected to work in the coal mining industry after his dad, but he has bigger plans, as big as rocket science, literally. Homer was inspired by mrs. Reiley his science teacher to build a rocket with his friends while making big choices along the way. The mining industry is a very dangerous/hard working job. Homers father expected him to do his job and make him proud, meanwhile homer had other plans. One day at the dinner table homer expressed his feelings with saying, “I want to build a rocket.” his family reacted by laughing at him, which made him determined to accomplish this task, and this leads us to his next sacrifice. Homer had a pretty good social life, but when he was determined to build a rocket he was willing to sacrifice anything. He decides to risk his whole social career to walk up to Quinton, the biggest nerd in school, to ask him for help. Homer’s friends watched him in awe after they had just warned him what a dumb idea this would be, but Homer didn’t care. They needed access to weld their rocket together so homer asked one of the workers to weld together his rocket, even though this would risk his job. The worker accepted and the boys got to work with many trial & errors, everytime making a small change. The rocket advanced a lot over the course of many attempts. Then one long awaited day the boys were ready to launch again, “10..9..8..7..6..5..4..3..2..1” Success! Their rocket made it! Everyone was cheering especially their biggest fan, mrs. reiley.
