William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies is a novel based on a group of schoolboys that were flying on a plane to escape World War II and were shot down. They were shot down over a deserted tropical island in Britain. The boys suffered a large fire that burned the island, little food, and a boy that is out to kill everyone by the end of the book. Upon arrival to the island the two main character's Piggy and Ralph find a conch shell, which they believe could help them find the other boys. Ralph was the appointed leader for the boys. Jack one of the other boys that is stranded on the island was appointed the job of finding food for everyone to eat. The boys Ralph, Jack, and Simon go off to explore the island and see what it has on it. Upon returning from walking around the island Ralph makes a decision that they need to build a fire. He thinks that the smoke from the fire will catch the attention of other planes flying over the island. World War II shifted his point of view on humanity, making him realize its inclination toward evilness. His response to the ongoing struggle between faith and denial became Lord of the Flies, in which English schoolboys are left to survive on their own on an uninhabited island after a plane crash. Just like Golding, these boys underwent the trauma of war on a psychological level. Ralph, one of the older boys, stands out as the “chief,” leading the other victims of war in a new world. Without the constraints of government and society, the boys created a culture of their own influenced by their previous background of England.

This desire for leadership and compromise led to the fall of their society just like multiple countries during times of wars.
The Lord of the Flies, in its’ most basic form, is the struggle between two sides of humanity. We have Ralph, who is the epitome of civilization, democracy, and rationality. And yet there is a flip-side to the coin of society. Jack Merridew is everything that Ralph is not. He is savagery, he is dictatorship, and he is irrationality. Jack spotlights Ralph’s strengths, through his own errors and weaknesses. And yet he also shows Ralph’s naiveté at times. Ralph and Jack complement each other throughout the novel, and indeed they thoroughly illuminate the meaning of the work. They are civilization versus savagery. They are democracy versus dictatorship. They are rationality versus irrationality. And it is just a matter of time before one of them overwhelms the other.

From the time that the boys land on the island, both a power struggle and the first signs of the boys' inherent evil, Piggy's mockery, occur. After blowing the conch and summoning all the boys to come for an assembly, an election is held. "I ought to be chief , said Jack with simple arrogance, because I'm chapter chorister and head boy"(Golding 22). After Ralph is elected Chief, Jack envies his position and constantly struggles for power with Ralph throughout the rest of the novel, convincing the rest of the boys to join his tribe rather than to stay with Ralph. Also, soon after the boys arrive at the island, Piggy, a physically weak and vulnerable character, is mocked and jeered at by the other boys. After trying to recount all of the liluns' names, Piggy is told to "Shut up, Fatty," by Jack Merridew. Ralph remarks by saying, "He's not Fatty. His real name's Piggy." All of the boys on the island, except for Piggy, laugh and make themselves more comfortable at Piggy's expense. "A storm of laughter arose and even the tiniest child joined in. For a moment the boys were a closed circuit of sympathy with Piggy outside."(Golding 21). The boys instinctively become more comfortable with one another after Piggy's mockery and create a bond, leaving Piggy on the outside.
Upon the arrival of the boys to the island Jack immediately found himself in the center of a power struggle. Although the conflict was brief, there was still a very obvious confrontation between Jack and Ralph. Once the boys had assembled themselves there was an election to see who was to be chief. Despite the fact that Ralph was voted leader, the desire to be in command never left Jack. Jack already had some leadership skills, being head choirboy at his old school, and he continuously challenged Ralph. The greatest source of conflict between Jack and Ralph was the debate over the necessity of maintaining a fire. Ralph felt that it was necessary to keep it burning at all times while Jack believed that hunting pigs and getting meat was much more essential.
There are three older boys, Ralph, Jack, and Piggy, that have an effect on the group of younger boys. The Main character Ralph, changes throughout the novel because of his role of leadership and responsibility, which shapes him into a more strict but caring character as the group becomes more uncivilized and savage. At the beginning of the story, after the plane crashed on the island and the boys are accounted for, Ralph feels very free and absent.
