In this century, a college degree is a necessity to success in almost every occupational field. Without such degree, it is often difficult to find a job. Although this concept pushes more people to earn a secondary education, something else is holding them back. College tuition is one of the major reasons people decide to not attend college. Without the necessary funding for students, many drop out prior to obtaining a degree. There are many reasons why student choose not to attend college, but the high cost is certainly the most popular. More students might attend college if the tuition is lowered to an affordable and steady price. The more that a parent makes results in less financial aid awarded to his or her child. A lot of students file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) prior to the following school year. Depending on the parents’ income and other criteria, the FAFSA will estimate the EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) for the following year. If one’s parents do not earn much money, the student is eligible for the Pell Grant and other opportunities. But, if one’s parents make too much, then that student will either earn little or not earn any federal or state financial aid. Obviously, this can be problematic for both students and parents when preparing for college expenses. According to CNN writer Katie Lobasco,“...some middle and upper-middle class families find that what the college expects them to contribute is more than what they can afford” (Lobosco 2016). The only other ways a student can earn money are either loans or scholarships. Most students have a fear of taking out student loans so they try their hardest for scholarships. Although, most scholarships and scholarship programs are very competitive and the chances of winning any can be small.
