Mania is an excessive enthusiasm or desire, typically with a negative intention, and that is what Roger Chillingworth suffered from. Throughout the novel, he goes out of his way to make the life of Arthur Dimmesdale awful. He tortures Dimmesdale from the inside out, psychologically outsmarting him at every turn. Chillingworth claims that Hester is the reason he has acted so awfully, but it is not common for others to agree with him. Hester, even though she is caught in her sin, shows great strength of character; Hester chooses to protect those that she cares about even though it causes her personal suffering. In his essay On the Scarlet Letter, D.H. Lawrence explores Nathaniel Hawthorne’s portrayal of Hester Prynne. Lawrence focuses on and condemns Hester’s sin itself rather than its consequences. Instead of supporting Hawthorne's depiction of Hester as an innocent character, Lawrence sheds light on what he believes is her true character, a deceiver. He argues that Hester Prynne has a false appearance of purity through his use of critical diction, sarcastic tone, and biblical allusions.
Even though Hester faced a lot of adversities in the story, she is able to gain advantages as well when she gains power through the scarlet letter. Aside from power, she is also able to utilize the symbol to exercise her freedom against the laws of a patriarchal society. Furthermore, she is also able to control the badge’s meaning as well because through her charity work for the town, she was able to reverse the interpretation of the public to the scarlet symbol. However, this is not the only source of Hester’s power because apart from the scarlet letter, her knowledge about the concept of silence plays an important for this as well. When she remains reserve despite the constant and intimidating interrogations that she receives on the scaffold, she is able to control the townspeople’s curiosity. Other than control, the scene in the scaffold is also able to prove how determined Hester is especially when she stood up for her decision to keep the father’s name a secret. Moreover, the scene also displays her strength as a woman, which was deemed to be uncommon considering the stereotypes present during the Puritan era. In The Scarlet Letter, the main protagonist Hester Prynne is quite a strong woman handling all these trials basically on her own. The author Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts Hester without many of the stereotypes that we know to have been in women's lives I would hope that those stereotypes have been long since buried, but sadly some still remain. Although there are many differences as to how women were treated in the time of the puritans, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s time period, and our own generation. I would hope to show that Hester Prynne defies the stereotypes pinned on her by the time frame.
Nathaniel Hawthorne paints Hester Prynne as a person, a person that made mistakes, but who worked tirelessly to atone for them. Hawthorne’s use of of positive diction and profound imagery also set Hester’s tone as a woman scorned, but

When walking through town, “.she never raised her head to receive their greeting. If they were resolute to accept her, she laid her finger on the scarlet letter and passed on” (Hawthorne, 127). She believes that she is not worthy of the towns acknowledgments and chooses to ignore them.
Hester Prynne's guilt is the result of her committing adultery, which has a significant effect on her life. Hester is publicly seen with the scarlet letter when she first emerges out of the cold dark prison. "It had the effect of a spell, taking her out of the ordinary relations with humanity and enclosing her in a sphere by herself" (49). The spell that is mentioned is the scarlet letter, "so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom" (49). The scarlet letter is what isolates her from everyone else because it symbolizes sin. Hester is in her very own sphere, where her sin affects her livelihood and has completely cut her off from the world. Her entrance into the sphere marks the beginning of her guilt and it occurs when she is in the prison after her first exposure to the crowd. The prison marks the beginning of a new life for Hester, a life full of guilt and seclusion. Her problem is that her shame is slowly surfacing while she faces the crowd realizing that she has been stripped of all her pride and everything that was important to her in the past. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester is the main character. Hester is referred to as “Mistress Prynne” (Hawthorne 70). The Scarlet Letter also mentions she is holding her three month old baby, Pearl, in her arms who winked and turned her head by the sun’s rays (Hawthorne 71). She is described as having an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread “letter A” on the breast of her gown (Hawthorne 71). Hester was also a tall woman (Hawthorne 72). Throughout all the sinful things Hester Prynne has done, she still managed to obtain good qualities. Hester was an adulterer from the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hester was looked down upon by the citizens of Boston because of the sin she and another person committed, but no one knew who her partner in crime was because she refused to release his name. Towards the very end of the story Hester’s accomplice confessed and left Hester and Pearl feeling joyous, because now they didn’t have to keep in a secret. Hester is a trustworthy, helpful, and brave woman throughout The Scarlet Letter.
