Third to enter is Susanna Walcott who is a nervous rushed girl. When Susanna states “he cannot discover no medicine for it in his books” there is a feeling of depression but, also, a feeling of eager to find a cure for whatever is wrong with Betty. When Susanna suggest there may be unnatural causes Parris jumps at her stating there is nothing unnatural causing this to happen to Betty. As Susanna leaves Abigail and Parris both tell her no to speak of Betty in the village. When Abigail and Parris are alone, Abigail informs her uncle, Parris, that there is a rumor of witchcraft being out in the village. When Parris asks Abigail what all of the girls were doing in the forest she tells her father they were dancing. Mercy Lewis enters which adds to the intensity of the situation because she is supposed to be at home watching sick Ruth. When Mercy states Ruth has improved she gave a powerful sneeze before Mrs. Putnam states “Ah, there’s a sign of life!” Implying that Ruth is not in this world as herself. She implies that Ruth is a different person than who she used to be. The dialogue mentions praying quite a few times adding to the fact that this village is quite grand and strict in religion. Mrs. Putnam leaves which leaves the feeling a little less intense. Mary Warren enters intensely and states the whole country is talking about witchcraft which left the intense feeling to a whole new level. Betty “wakes up” but is not acting like her self which leaves the reader curious as to whats going on and frightened for everyone’s safety. This play has the potential to be a realistic play because the teenage girls are telling lies to their parents and almost all teenage girls tell lies to their parents at least once to keep them out of
