Even if we are living in an era that people can mostly enjoy the freedom of speech, the tension between people and authorities is still in place. As far as I am concerned, I think Shakespeare's spirit is indeed embodied in some of my artwork. For instance, as a tribute to one of my favorite artists and activists in China, Ai Weiwei, I used a box of colorful cereal Trix to create the portrait of him, and documented the whole process by taking hundreds of photos. In 2011, filmmaker Alison Klayman published her short documentary video, titled as Who's Afraid of Ai Weiwei?, which ends as the government destroyed Ai's new studio in Shanghai and Klayman asking Ai why he is fearless. “I’m so fearful,” Ai answers, “If you don’t act, the dangers become stronger.” Since the answer toward that title question is quite obvious, my question Who's Afraid of Trix? alludes that nobody should be afraid of the colorful Trix, or of speaking out. Toward the ending of my video, each of the cereal ball was crushed and blended together; then, the portrait was immersed by hundreds of perfect Trix balls.
