The school board plans to add one and a half hours to school each day. I disagree with this decision because it’s cutting into dinner time with families , our little siblings need help getting into the house, and it will cut our sleep time down for school in the morning .
Little kids need help getting off the school bus and into the house. They also need assistance walking down the street because you don’t know who is watching them. Also they may have somewhere to go like the doctor or they may have a problem and cant get a hold of there mom or dad.
The extension of school time will get in the way of dinner with our families. Dinner is a way for us to bond and take the time to ask each other how was your day , figure out what
The school systems are constantly changing. New ideas are being tossed back and forth between school boards all over the country. Now they’re tossing around the idea of having 4-day school weeks, rather than a normal 5 day school week. Some think it is a terrific idea, saves funding in the educational department. Others think that parents will have issues with it, having to deal with extra childcare cost, also how will the younger children deal with the longer school days. This issue will effect, not only parents, but teachers, school bus drivers, and students etc.
High School students are decreasing in standardized test scores and attendance due to lack of sleep. It has been proven by research in miscellaneous High Schools around the US that with just one hour of extra sleep student's test score increased along with their attendance records. The extra hour will also give you more time in the morning to finish homework and other things that you did not have time for the night before. However, others believe that the extra time added onto the end of the school day will interfer with afterschool activities such as sports practices and games. Schools should change to later start within the next year because it will help improve the lives of students along with their academics as well.
“BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!” The teenage student slams on the snooze button and struggles to get out of bed for the early school day. Teens on average need 9 ¼ hours of sleep (Backgrounder: Later School Start Times). Teens currently average fewer than 7 hours of sleep (Backgrounder: Later School Start Times). Hectic schedules, poor sleep habits, homework, and family obligations are the problem (Backgrounder: Later School Start Times). Schools are considering starting their school days later in the morning. For example, one Minneapolis school considered pushing back their start time from 7:15 to 8:30. Another Seattle school considers pushing back the school day start reported Jean Enersen. Would this benefit the students or harm the students? Is this for the better or for the worse? These are questions many superintendents and school board members are asking themselves. They all want to do what is best for their students, so the topic takes a lot of thinking, planning, and conversations. School starting later can be a very controversial issue.
Imagine waking up and looking in the mirror with bags under your eyes; you look like you have lived a long ninety years, but in reality you have been deprived of sleep from a tiring week of work. If this sounds depressing to you, how can you ignore the feeling of all the teenagers who are forced to mentally function before their biological clocks are even put in gear? School should have a later starting time for the sake of students paying more attention, schools acquiring improved attendance, and parents being less worryful about their kids.
The school districts should consider switching school start times and hour later, because of all the kids who get bad attendance, bad grades, and don't get enough sleep at night. The later schools start the more students are gonna pass and get good attendance and
Todays students are busier than they have ever been in American history. Homework is a large contributor to this. The average student in America has approximately four hours of homework each night. If students start homework right when they get home from school, that gives them free time starting at 7:00 PM. The majority of students also have jobs. So. between school, work, homework, and practice, that leaves them virtually no time to be able to hang out with friends or to participate in family activities.
If a student was a part of a team or club at their school, they would not be able to meet or practice until later in the day. The same goes for teens who have an afterschool job. Both issues would force teenagers to go home at a later time, which means that they have to stay up longer working on assignments due the following school day. According to Pannoni, some school districts will only alter the school starting time of their high schools, which causes families with multiple kids that attend more than one school to still wake up around the same time so their siblings are not late to school. Ultimately, any kind of schedule change would require students to shape their afterschool activities around it whether it means dropping a club or requesting less hours at their workplace. At first it may be difficult to get comfortable with this new schedule, however, just like any other routine, over time it will become integrated into their
Have you ever heard the saying that “Time is money?” Well this statement holds truth to it and when it comes to school, the saying is right on the money. The economy has seen an increase in inflation and it seems like everything is on the rise. Constantly, people are struggling to find money. Money is an issue for many, especially for schools facing budget cuts and high school students who are seeking out opportunities to go to college. Could a solution to this lie within how a school system’s schedule is set-up? Well traditionally, high schools have been run on a five day schedule where students attend school for approximately seven to eight hours. Now, from pressure from the economy, a small percent of high schools have seen a change in scheduling to a four-day week and the benefits seen from this have been substantial. School system debates have been prevalent since schools began, and like any issue, there are benefits and drawbacks of the four-day school week. Even though critics may argue that an extra day out of school would be a waste of time, changing every high school to the four day week schedule would yield many benefits, including cutting school spending, increasing school performance, opening up job opportunities for high school students to earn money, and preparing students for college.
According to research, teenagers have a hard time waking up early and going to bed early. Some people feel that school should start later in the day and end later in the day to accommodate students' sleep schedules. Then, there are others who feel school hours should remain the same so there is more time to do other things. I feel that this issue mainly comes down to how sleep affects students, the disadvantages of school starting late, and the advantages of school starting late. Although, sleep may not seem all that important, it actually is a crucial element in your well-being. Your body needs sleep for your brain to function properly. In my opinion, school starts way too early in the morning. I feel that school hours should be changed to
First, the cost of going an extra hour is tremendous. The teachers will want a raise in their checks, because they will have to deal with kids for an extra hour rather than go home and spend time with their family. Also, the school will have to pay for electricity so the school will run out of money quick. I want our school to at least keep money so
Over the past few years, there has been a continual debate over changing the high school start time. In my opinion, start times should be delayed to promote students’ health and to increase academic performance. In Saratoga High School, there was a recent discussion about a change in their school schedule. Many parents fought for a new start time of 8:15 AM instead of the current time of 7:50 AM. Bill Mistele, the superintendent of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union School District, and the board decided to grant this change. Evidently, this shows that schools see the reasonableness and have allowed a change in the start times. In an article titled, “Should High Schools Ring a Later Bell?” it presents many reasons that schools decide against the idea. For example, The Jackson Hole school district believed if there were any changes in the schedule, it would
School should be four days a week with an extra hour added to each school day because it would save money for the school system, increase student motivation, stimulate the economy, and promote student achievement. There has been a decrease in education due to the small amount of resources, causing classrooms to be bigger and children not being able to extend their knowledge. Even though the economy has been falling, each school district has been working hard to promote student education, which could mean trading a traditional school schedule for a four-day school week. Replacing a normal school schedule for the four day school week can raise the school budget tremendously. (Hart, Demand Media).
At the dinner table, if you can't think of anything to say, sit quietly. ... A successful dinner is one that lasts a while and one where everyone leaves happy. It's a meal where we didn't just wolf food down, rather something else happened ... The dinner hour is a sacred, happy time when everyone should be together and relaxed.
Most children attend school for about 6.5 hours per day. Some people argue that this not enough time for children to master key concepts while others say that children spend too much time in school and on homework which leaves them little time for family or fun activities. “There are many benefits to year-round schooling—including consistency, less time spent relearning material, and the implications that year-round schooling has for closing the achievement gap” (Lynch, 2016, par. 1). Currently, more than 700 schools have extended their day. Massachusetts extended their school day so that it was 8 hours and found that they went up 44 percent in math,19 percent in science, and 39 percent in language arts (“Should students spend more time in
If school days were shorter students would have more time to sleep. “According to WebMD children between ages children between ages 12 and 18 need at least eight hours of sleep” (ehow.com). Between the long six to seven hours spent at school, homework, extra-curricular activities and sports very few students get the amount of sleep that they need. If students aren’t getting enough sleep it’s going to be hard for students to concentrate at school the next day. Lack of sleep can contribute to obesity, depression, car accidents and lower quality of life (theatlantic.com). If school days were shorter by even just an hour, students would have an extra hour to sleep.
