Group Work Reflection

Many adults and peers have had an influential impact on the person I am today. Without attending public school, I don’t believe I would have learned as much as I have about socializing with others and how to function in society. School gave me the opportunity to be part of a team in school sports and other school clubs. I learned how to work as a group, cheer and support team members. I was also lucky enough to be part of a student exchange program. This resulted in me learning how to live with another family, attend a new school, adapt to a whole new set of rules and expectations. In school, I learned and acquired more skills on how to function in large groups, respect other people, take turns, learn from others, have patience, cheer on others to succeed, comfort others when they needed it. When I do encourage and praise students, I like to focus on growth mindset. I want to instill the desire to look at learning as more than good or bad, pass or fail. I focus on what the student has accomplished or has overcome. In the classroom, group work is often a method used to help students learn a new concept and teach social skills. During group work, students learn how to interact, cooperate, work as a team, have tolerance of one another, patience and how to resolve the conflict. Group work is monitored so you can help resolve conflict, change the subject if needed, and modify work for some students so they can work in a group. When creating groups or partners, I sometimes like to place a peer that has strong skills in my desired outcome because students often learn better from their peers that are more advanced than they are.
