Adults should never estimate children about their awareness of racism because according to (Winkler, 2009),” children not only recognize race from a very young age but develop racial biases by ages three to five” (p.10). Children have no recollection about racial bias until they are taught to do so. It talks about how the teacher overlooks the diverse nature; however, with John’s professional background, he needs to reconsider what we know about young children and race (Winkler, 2009). In a group bias, it means that people favor their own group in their own perspective including sharing their decisions. Creating an inclusive and respectful classroom is an ongoing effort, and working for social justice is a life-long endeavor (ADL, 2016). There are some practices that John can use to decrease bias and instill positive morals with his class. First, the children need to practice self-exploration, which is to observe one’s cultural biases and assumptions. Comprehensive integration is when one moves beyond the constraints of a cultural history month by incorporating perspectives into aspects of the curriculum (ADL, 2016). Comprehensive integration means to incorporate all months of the year, not just February, black history month. I know that the media and calendar made this a special month for African American people, but diversity is growing every day. Although, the white child may have repeated what he has heard from an adult, but it is John’s responsibility to redirect the white child when bias statements surface in the classroom. According to (Winkler, 2009), “Confusing dark skin with dirt is a common misconception among white preschool children”
