Is Graffiti Art or Vandalism. The word "graffiti" is defined as a writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place and the word "art" means the conscious use of skill and the creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects. When the word graffiti is said only one thing is thought of and that is some drawing on the side of a building using paint. People use graffiti to freely express themselves by using many different colors of paint and drawing abstract objects to give a different perspective and can sometimes tell a story. The use of vibrant colors could mean the person is happy or wants other people to take notice of the work they have provided. Many graffiti artists create murals that represent how to the surrounding locations used to be. In these murals, it could be a list of things such as specific people or drawings of how things used to be years ago. These murals are created for the people in the communities and for them to never let a memory fade away. According to the San Bernardino County Museum, the first mural was created by David Siqueriros. His painting was called "La América Tropical" and became a tourist attraction for a Bavarian beer garden. (Quick Sketches) Murals are used to boost communities and give tourists things to see. It is a sad day when an entire mural is taken down or destroyed by local business owners. Once graffiti has been made a public tourist attraction it is protected under the Visual Arts Rights Act. In the case of "5pointz vs Gerald Wolkoff", the court ruled the murals that were painted in New York were protected Under the V.A.R.A, resulting in the landlord to pay $6.75 million in damages to the 21 artists whose work was destroyed.
