The news article that I read talked about the effects of globalization on types of mental illness. This article is titled, ‘Understanding depression and mental illness’ written by Mylene Mendoza-Dayrit talks about the effects of mental illness, depression and suicide and how globalization adds to it. In the article Dayrit had interviewed Dr. Violeta Bautista, a clinical psychologist from U of P. When asked, ‘Why is there an increase in teen suicide and what can we do to help?’ This was her reply, “Globalization exposes young people to different lifestyles, beliefs... there is no ready, available person to help process such information. Kids turn to iPads, smartphones and tablets to see and learn things that might not be appropriate. I think this article refers to globalization and health in our textbook. This is because this article talks about the process of globalization having an effect on mental health. On chapter 13 of our global book it states, “globalization contributes to the health transitions that are occurring in many parts of the world by mixing diverse populations in rapidly growing cities, transporting infections across the globe, altering dietary practices and accelerating environmental changes” (Introduction to Global Health second edition, 309). This particular description from the book relates with this article spot on because he talks about the different ways global health has an impact on different things. This contributes to my understanding of global health because it teaches me that not only can it just effect developing countries but it contributes to ideas that steam from our own backyard.
