Character Sketch: General Zaroff General Zaroff from the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell proves to be a determine, analytical and immoral character. Zaroff is "singularly handsome man" (Connell, 4). "He [is] tall and middle age, for his hair [is] a vivid white; but his thick eyebrows and pointes military moustache [are] black as night," (4). He is Cossack who`s singular passion is hunting. He has "hunted every kind of game in every land," (5). In this story, he is seen as the antagonist as he decides to hunt Sanger Rainsford the antagonist of the story, although he is a very difficult prey who is difficult to catch. In the text he had proved to be a very determined man especially when it comes to the hunt. His single-mindedness is clearly visible through the ways he assures his capability to hunt animals. An example of this would be that he hunts humans for the simple reason that hunting animals had b become boring for him. Plus, he does not see this as wrong in the least bit as he says "I'm a hunter, not a murderer," (7). Furthermore, in his hunting game of human against human, he tells Sanger Rainsford "I'll cheerfully acknowledge myself defeat id I do not find you by midnight on the third day," (9). However, he is quick to go back on his word when Rainsford does win and he chooses to challenge him on a battle to the death instead of peacefully releasing him (13). In conclusion, the General is a man with a cold heart and a lack of good the good values that make us human. In the end, General Zaroff lost his battle against Rainsford, even though he was set on winning his dangerous game. This short story is a very good read and kept me interest form the first page to the last. I highly recommend this story to anybody who loves suspenseful
