The Good in the Bad and the Bad in the Good of Four Day School Weeks The tradition of students attending school for five days a week is beginning to be something of the past. In many schools across the United States, they are changing to where the students are only going to school for four days a week. This change may be beneficial to the kids who like fast-paced things, but for those who cannot catch on as quickly as others this switch would not be good for them. A four day school week would also imply that the school days be longer and more jampacked, because the day, Monday or Friday, being lost would have to be made up for. The school day and class periods would be longer because the day being lost would have to be made up. Teachers now have to fit five days of information into four days, which “means a lessened focus, which can cause grades to drop” (“10 Main Pros” 1). The change in learning more information in a short amount of time would make it challenging for younger students to pay attention, so this is not beneficial to their grades. All students, Kindergartners through Seniors, would come to find that it is hard to focus in and pay attention for these longer time lengths. If the students are not focused in, then they will often not be able to remember all of the material they learned that day. Changing to a four day school week would not be ideal because it would lessen the focus of the students, but not only would it lessen their focus it would also not prepare the students for their …show more content…

When the students are no longer in school on Fridays or Mondays the parents are now in charge of ensuring their child’s safety. Parents who have younger children would have to pay for daycare or other programs, so the parents can continue to work and the children would be taken care of (Bisk 1). Paying for an extra day of daycare would be tough on those parents or guardians who are not financially stable and get reduced school fees. It would either make them not work that day or just pay the extra money. The ECO Friendly Blog members of Green Garage state that, “Most of them [parents] who have young students will be coerced to pay for daycare for a day that children may not have if the school schedule was still 5 days” (“10 Main Pros” 1). The change to a four day school week causes extra stress on the parents that they wouldn’t have if the school just remained a five day school week. It will force the parents to provide care for their child or children on the day that is lost, therefore Colby Public Schools school not change to a four day school
