Jerilynn Webster; also known as ‘JB The First Lady’, is an Indigenous Vancouver based beat-boxer, hip-hop artist, activist, aboriginal youth educator and a single mother (News, CBC). Jerilynn is a proud Indigenous member of the Nuxalk and Cayuga (Six) Nation (Jb the First Lady) who immensely contributes to her community. She was born in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan in an impoverished ‘single-parent, Christian home” (Warner). Upon her arrival to Vancouver; at the age of 14, she was flooded by a culture-shock of experienced racism and discrimination as people negatively labelled her with elements of her race and culture (Hong). It was after this incident that she began to become aware of the profound issues living in a white-dominated city. She often attended the friendship centre where she felt at home and began her own career as an emcee, director and actor (Hong). She also began recording in a studio called KAYA (Knowledge Aboriginal Youth Association) (Hong). Seeing that her childhood memories restricted her from listening to music with the exception of Christian or ‘50s music (Warner), in her lyrics, Jerilynn delivers messages of racism, discrimination, effects of residential schooling, female empowerment, female experiences, and other politicized topics (JB The First Lady). The actual “First Lady” would have been Martha, but the name had not been created yet. She stood by her husband’s side the entire time, and stated in a letter that public life was “dull life”. She had also written a letter saying,“no, God forbid, for everybody and everything conspire to make me as contented as possible in it.”...“the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our disposition.” (Martha Washington, 1789)
The first lady appears to be trustworthy, in that she holds true to her contract of marriage although her husband has made and abomination of the sacred agreement. The marriage now, however, may actually be more political, but Mrs. Clinton makes it seem that she is not giving up on the marriage, a strong virtue especially in today's society. Coming from a home where the mother held a job yet was still expected to cook, clean, and look after the kids, one can see where the frustration comes from. There are women who slip through the cracks because they struggle to juggle all of their new found responsibilities. The women’s rights movements dropped the ball on how to transition from stay at home moms to working moms with stay at home expectations. This is one area that major improvement is needed and quickly. If women do not receive the help and support they need, they might start thinking they only have one choice and all the progress made will start to regress. Hilary Clinton was a great example of a working mother. Because she worked in politics she was often harshly judged for what she said and for the work she did. People wanted a first lady who kept quiet and supported her husband, the president, in the background. If these are the stereotypes being applied to the president’s wife, what hope do women have of breaking free from what is considered the societal norm? Where was the women’s rights movement to back up the first lady when it would have made a huge impact of young girls and women in our country or even world? Abigail Adams, a woman very well known today originally met her husband John Adams when she was 15 years old and later on became the first lady during his presidency. When she turned 11 she met with a college professor and started her education. Abigail was born on November 22, 1744 and died on October 28, 1818 (The World of Abigail Adams). Throughout her life she had many long lasting accomplishments and was a leader in her household and for women. She helped make the Americas what they are today and helped give rights to woman. Abigail Adams was an important figure because of her relation to John Adams, her religious views, her accomplishments, and how they had long lasting effects in the world and on the United States today.
Mary Ann Todd Lincoln, wife of the sixteenth President of the United States, was born December 13, 1818, in Lexington, Kentucky to Robert and Eliza Parker Todd. She was raised in a wealthy, yet dysfunctional family. She was well educated as a child, but needed more attention while growing up.Mary had a lot of problems as a Southern woman during the Civil War. Many people disliked her and people often criticized her actions while she was in the White House. Her problems began early in her life. She had five brothers and sisters and was not given all of the attention she needed. This was difficult because she had a short temper and demanded a lot of attention. When Mary was four her baby brother died. She didn?t know what exactly happened, but she still showed that she was hurt by his death. Two years later when Mary was six years old her mother died. Eliza Parker Todd was only 31 years old when she died and she left her husband Robert with six children to look after. Eliza's death was extremely hard for Mary because she was just starting to get close to her mom. After just a year, her dad married Betsy Humphreys. Robert and Betsy were married on November 1, 1826. Betsy had eight children, giving them a total of 14 children to care for. This many children made it hard for Robert and Betsy to properly care for their children. Eliza's children were not fond of Betsy and she did not care much for them either. Those children watched out for each other and Elizabeth, Mary's oldest sister, took on her mother?s role. Mary started to become more independent just like her older sisters.Soon the Todd family moved into a new home in Lexington, which was yet another difficult change for Mary.
George Washington was the first President of the United States of America. He was born on the 22nd of February in 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. “He was one of our biggest presidents,”as he ranged about 6 feet and two inches tall, weighing about 200 pounds. Washington would be considered a “dog lover” in modern society, as he bred hound dogs and reportedly treated them as though they were apart of his family. I believe that he treated his pets as though they were family, because he never had any children of his own (only stepchildren). George Washington, being the 1st president of the United States, is not only known for leading the Continental Army to victory over the British during the American Revolution, he also set the standards and defined the duty as President for all future Presidents to follow.
For many years, American Presidents were viewed as being white and powerful leaders. Why were they only white? Is it because Americans felt Blacks were not smart enough to run a country on their own? African Americans were viewed as less dominate people and have been discriminated because of the color of their skin. In 2008, Barack Obama was elected President of the United States making him the first black president ever.
