In the 21st century, bringing up feminism is still a hotly debatable topic. Fighting for equal human rights for everyone has been going on for decades. Have we really progressed as a united nation if we are still fighting for the same rights? Feminism can be a sensitive topic to bring up due to all stereotypes. Considering yourself as a feminist you may be told, “oh you are one of those”, “so you hate men” or be classified as a “raging feminist”. Although having all of these negative stereotypes hasn’t stopped the feminist community to continue to thrive and fight for equal opportunities as men. Being privileged is having an upper hand on something. When someone has a privilege it isn’t a fair playing ground or equal for everyone. According to Peggy McIntosh, “privilege simply confers dominance because of one’s race or sex”(McIntosh). Men gain multiple advantages due to women’s disadvantages. Women are oppressed are by men all the time even in day to day actions. Marilyn Frye focuses on the root word which is press and describes it as “ they restrain, restrict, or prevent the thing’s motion or mobility”. Women are oppressed or trying to be restrained simply because they are women. Some may argue that men are oppressed as well, but they don’t experience disadvantages simply because they are a man. They do experience sufferings and feelings, however, there aren’t multiple barriers put in place and justified just because of their sex. There are all these barriers put in place to restrict females and keep males superior. For example, men opening the doors for females isn’t helpful at all and women are fully capable of doing it on their own. This just sends out the message that women are incapable and mocks behavior of servants and masters. The simple gesture that happens daily is just one example of a barrier that is put to restrain
