On May 13th of 2017 I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing after four years of hard work. As I walked across the stage they announced, “Stephanie’s future plans are to go back to school to become a family nurse practitioner.” If you asked me then why I wanted to do so I would have a very similar answer to the one I have now. However, over the past year I have become even more passionate about that answer and my desire to pursue this degree.
I had already determined during nursing school that I wanted to continue my education beyond my bachelor’s degree. I began to look at different options and I spent time shadowing to determine what would be best for me and quickly became interested in the family nurse practitioner role. I admired that as providers they had the opportunity to work directly with patients of all ages, educate patients, talk about preventative care, promote a healthy lifestyle and perform exams among many other things. Many times, patients ask me questions regarding what a doctor has just told them because they feel like they may not fully understand. I typically will use my extra time to explain things to them and provide them with resources to ensure they can go home feeling confident about new prescriptions, discharge instructions and their follow-up care. My desire to further my own education stems from my desire to be able to continually further the education of my patients as well. As a family nurse practitioner, I look forward to having the opportunity to be someone that people in the community feel they can confide in and trust while also feeling like they are truly being heard when they explain their symptoms and concerns. I plan to pursue a career in nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. This career take many steps to complete. But it is different routes you can take and different programs you can enroll in for this profession. Family Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medication and diagnose patients and give treatment. They can work either in hospitals and or clinics as a primary healthcare provider. They can also order specific x-rays and test that need to be done for a patient. The nurse practitioners interact with less patients in a clinic than in a hospital. Np’s have privileges to prescribe medications in every state.
My interest in nursing is fairly new; I had not explored the potential that a nursing career can offer. I became familiar with nursing professionally after becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. While working with patients, side-by-side with nurses I became enamored with the potential of a nursing career. My first experience with children was when I would babysit younger kids. Caring for them while they were sick brought a sense of joy nursing them back to health. After doing this for so long, I grew a passion for taking care of children as a profession. I want to help kids feel better and watch them grow into world-changing individuals, so that is why I chose Pediatric Nurse Practitioner as my career. As a nurse seeking my bachelor in nursing I have a lot of mentors in my career path. The person I choose to interview is my mentor name, Karen. In the process of her nursing career, she was influenced by her mentor to continue her education, in women's health because of her passion for young teens. It is important to evaluate which learning style your patients prefer in order for them to best understand what needs to be done for the maximum appropriate outcome. Licensed practical nurses are advocates and that’s someone who supports and supplies information to their patients. Advocacy often involves standing up in support of a patient and their rights. This is especially true when patients are not able to protect their own rights. When filling the role of counselor, Licensed Practical Nurses can help patients and families explore ideas and feelings towards healthcare and illness (8 Roles of the LPN). Some patients have a difficult time accepting a disease or its treatment options. As a practical nurse you consult with RN supervisors regarding patient care and assessments. In some settings LPN 's communicate directly to physicians. Communicating information to the proper people assists in increasing the effectiveness of care plans (Role). When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I have been a licensed practical nurse for about 19 years and becoming a registered nurse has always been a plan for my future. Having to raise a family at a young age prevented me from continuing my education right away. My family is now more self-sufficient and I’m able to attend school and further my nursing journey and education.
