Why I want to be a nurse? I have asked myself this question numerous times, and have come up with a variety of answers. I think that being a nurse just embodies the characteristics that I have innately had and characterizes the person I am now. Nursing is more than a profession to me; it encompasses my life in every aspect. Nursing challenges me, nothing is ever exactly the same each day. There are so many opportunities in nursing and so many ways to challenge myself and learn new things. I have been a licensed practical nurse for about 19 years and becoming a registered nurse has always been a plan for my future. Having to raise a family at a young age prevented me from continuing my education right away. My family is now more self-sufficient and I’m able to attend school and further my nursing journey and education. …show more content…
There are so many opportunities in nursing and so many ways to challenge myself and learn new things. I decided to go to school for my lpn when I had my first child. I had so many questions about my new baby’s health and her growth and development that I decided that becoming a lpn would help me know more about medicine and treatments. I was brand new at nursing, I had no medical background and neither did anyone in my immediate family. I remember hearing my family talk about diabetes, which is common in my family and all the myths and rumors they believed to be true. I chuckle now thinking back to the stories that they told and how false most of their information was. Lpn school was my first time back to school as an adult learner and I gained a lot of knowledge about medical terminology and basic skills. Attending school helped me understand how the body works and helped me in my everyday life. I never thought about becoming a nurse while I was in high school but after Lpn school I realized I had found my

Nursing came in a round-about way for me. I had little direction when I graduated high school and had already disregarded the nursing field due to an incident with a family member (who was a nurse) that had left a negative impression about the nursing field on me. I entered college planning on a pre-med or biology major. I had built up a vision of college being different- scholarly, intellectual, advanced- different somehow than school before. I soon was disillusioned. My first biology course was a bitter disappointment and I turned away from any thoughts of a medical/health related career altogether.
Being a nurse practitioner is a good career. A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with an added education of two years, which gives them added advantage like those of a doctor. A nurse practitioner is different in his/her own way. He/she works along with other health professionals like doctors, pharmacists, and therapists. A nurse practitioner has mandates to treat the sick, prescribe drugs, and order for laboratory tests (Iglehart, 2013). The reason nurse practitioner is attractive is because I have always wanted to help people and the job is more challenging giving me the potential to grow. In this paper, I will discuss the duties of a nurse practitioner, the skills and education needed, pay range and the lifestyle.

A career in the medical field is always evolving, and always needing more hands. I knew from a young age that helping people is what I was meant to do, and from then on out every step I took was the way to a successful career in nursing. It is a profession that allows you to see people at their worst, all while helping them become their best. The most important task for nursing students is to create a clear pathway for our education, and to be sure to follow that plan accordingly. When choosing this career, I had to access my own strengths and weaknesses and really establish clear goals for myself and evaluate if I had what it takes to be a part of this diverse and skilled profession. I also decided not only not only do I need to set professional goals for this career, personal goals are important as well.
When people are asked why they want to become a nurse, they usually respond with an answer similar to, “It is just something I have always wanted to do”. However, for me, this was not the case. When reflecting on why I aspire to become a nurse, my answer resides in the rapidly growing job safety that the nursing career has to offer and the opportunity for specialization within this vast occupation. The leading factor that pulled me into nursing was the excessive amount of awaiting opportunities and advancements that are to be had once you obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
Professional nursing means diverse things to different individuals. Some define nursing as their calling and others may state they aspired to become a nurse since they were a child. I did not intend to select nursing as a career. In many respects, I believe I became a nurse long before I ever attended nursing school. When I was younger, I always wanted to pursue a medical career. Whether is was helping humans or animals, I always wanted to save lives. To this day I want to have a career in medicine, but I did not have a specific job in mind until recently. My mom was the one who introduced me to the idea of becoming a nurse anesthetist. After talking to my grandma, a retired registered nurse, I found that this could be a possible career choice. One of the things she loved most about her job was being able to get to know the patients personally. Nurse anesthetists are able to develop a relationship with their patients, but they don't have to do the dirty work like bathing patients and changing their bed pans. Another reason becoming a nurse anesthetist appealed to me is because I like to challenge myself. The classes are tough and several years of school are required. Some days are very stressful, but the rewards are well worth it.

I have always known that I want to pursue my career as a Registered Nurse. I have an extreme passion for helping people in need of medical attention. Not only would I love my job, but I will also be confident about being a great role model to my children. Having this as my life-long career will make me feel accomplished. Three specific reasons draw me to this profession. One reason is that my mom always came home from the hospital and told me stories about her patients. She is a Respiratory Therapist, so she would complain about nurses. I decided not to go her route, but instead become a nurse and help Certified Nurse Assistants, Phlebotomists, and Respiratory Therapists fulfill their job. The second reason is as a general Registered Nurse I can work anywhere from a nursing home to a major hospital and in different sections as well. For example, I can work as a telemetry nurse, practice travel nursing, work alongside surgeons as a surgical nurse, and become an office nurse. Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a person that someone relied on and trusted. At first I wanted to be a teacher, because I loved interacting with other people. As I grew up, I realized that I loved the relationships that the nurses built with my grandparents when they had to stay at the hospital. That made me realize that nursing was not just about giving people their medications, bathing them, and checking on them every hour. Several factors contributed to my pursuit of a career nursing, but the main reason I decided on this profession was my family. The medical field has held my interest since a young age, considering my mom has always worked in healthcare, so I was exposed to the field at a very early age. For many years I juggled with the idea of becoming a doctor or a veterinarian, not quite being able to decide which field in healthcare interested me the most, but in recent years I narrowed the interest I developed at a young age down to a profession in nursing. It was only after a discussion with my great-aunt that I decided to pursue nursing. My great-aunt made nursing her profession many years ago, and at family gatherings, she would often tell me fascinating stories about her time spent working in a hospital.
I have been interested in health care professions for most of my life, but more specifically with nursing.
