I. Over the past few decades we have learned about the benefits of exercise and why it is important. II. If I were to tell you that you do not need to spend hours in the gym in order to reap the benefits of exercise, would you do it? III. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, simply doing moderate aerobic activity, such as walking, for 30 minutes a day significantly reduces your risk for diseases. IV. Everyone knows that exercise is very beneficial but I am positive that most of us do not do it on a regular basis because more than one-third of adults are obese and studies have shown as many as 250,000 deaths per year are due to living a sedentary lifestyle. V. It is important to do daily exercise because of the effects it has on our body and the psychological benefits associated with physical exercise. Transition: First I am going to talk about how living a sedentary life is detrimental to our health. I. According to Dr. Jonathan Myers, living a sedentary lifestyle is one of the 5 major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. a. Cardiovascular disease is the number 1 killer in America. i. There are many types but the most common is coronary artery disease. ii. This happens slowly over time and is caused by the blockage of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. iii. This is the major reason people have heart attacks. b. Dr. Myers research indicated that those who partake in daily exercise had an increase in good cholesterol, reduction in blood pressure, and a reduction in body weight. i. This reduction in body weight is important because excess body fat is a large contributor to cardiovascular disease. ii. You reduce the risk for deadly diseases such as cardiovascular disease. VII. You gain beneficial psychological effects such as improved self-esteem, improve your cognitive abilities, and reduce depression. VIII. Simple things like taking the stairs can add up overtime and just remember that you do not need an extensive workout program to get the benefits of exercise. IX.
