How Success Strategies helped my College Career As a college freshman, I was worried about so many things coming into college. The biggest and most important thing was how to actually succeed in college. This course has helped me tremendously with succeeding in college. Throughout this semester, we have gone through multiple topics to help us succeed in college. The topics range from effective note taking, caring for yourself, how to succeed in college, understanding who you are, and also to planning your priorities. From taking this class, I have learned many strategies that helped me understand who I am as a person, how to take effective notes, and how to plan my time. All my years in school, I have struggled with taking notes. It was always a problem for me because I never knew the right and most effective way to take notes. Being in this class has benefited me towards my priorities. I was always one to procrastinate and I still am, but now I know how to do it in a smarter, more effective way. During this class, I found out how to plan my priorities. I had to think about my life priorities, semester priorities, and also my week’s priorities. All of these take time and dedication to achieve and procrastinating in the wrong way is not going to help. My life priorities were to graduate early, and receive my degree. The semester priorities were to pass all my classes, and also to take knowledge from the courses. My week’s priorities were a little more realistic, and they were to take time on my activities and to not be stressed about a small situation. These priorities are very important to me because I feel like these will lead me into the right direction for my career. This section of this course has had value toward my college career success. As Zig Ziglar once said, "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." Basically, Ziglar is emphasizing how learning can be accomplished, only if you put your mind to it. In “Learning (Your First Job),” Dr. Robert Leamnson shares his strong belief of beginning students entering the post-secondary education. Leamnnson discusses the many ways of learning that can be used in college, such as studying, notes, assignments, and exams. Leamnson continuously discusses how no one will learn unless they want to. Learning is a biological process that relies on the brain. Just like how our bodies need maintenance, the brain does too. College is a place where you learn things that help you later. Leamnson mentions how students are responsible for succeeding in college not by just showing up, but by putting in effort towards the classes they are taking. In order to succeed in the learning of the post-secondary education process, students should be aware of how to make notes, understand what they are studying, and take assignments seriously.
Growing up, my parents never expected perfection but expected that I try to accomplish my best. The effort I’ve put forth in learning has been reflected in my grades throughout my high school career. I’ve entered myself in vigorous course work such as AP Government and AP English to become well prepared for my college career, all while maintaining a 4.4 grade point average this year. Not only do I engage in AP classes, but up until this year I had no study halls. I wanted my day to be packed full of interesting classes that I would enjoy learning about. My grades and choice of classes prove the effort that I put forth in my learning. Working hard now can only pay off in the future. Learning now creates a well-rounded human being. Working to learn is why I am so dedicated to my studies now.
In college students must learn how to manage their time, organize their schedule that meets their college and personal duties, how to be resourceful, and how to interact with people whom they never met. Before college, a variety of students already learned how to accomplish these skills, but only a few of these students are fully responsible for themselves before leaving their home. Students who are dependent are most likely to have been helped by their parents who took an overprotective or extreme interest in the life of their children. Many students do not get the help they need to become independent and being overwhelmed may lead a student to commit suicide, fail, or even drop out during college. If a student fails, his or her self-esteem can be permanently damage, and the consequences can effect an entire lifetime. ...ut fun, I'm stressing my mind too much. Austin Dopp and Thomas Parish created an ABC journal about how to succeed in college. They mentioned that students need to study but also take a break and be ready to learn and pay attention (Dopp, Austin, Parish). Powers and Swick mention in tip seven, celebrate small accomplishments along the way, is that you should celebrate your small accomplish like tests, quiz, and finishing you semester.
With college right around the corner and taking a college course gave a real sense of how college classes are going to work giving me an edge over all of the other students going to college that didn’t take a dual enrollment course. In life, people come across challenging obstacles’ when trying to achieve their goals. College, like that of life, has a variety of challenges that appear in a student’s pathway to their goals. For most college students that are just starting out in the basic classes, such as Mrs. Fox-Angerer’s English 101, problems can arise due to classes being much harder than the prior high school classes the students are used to. Mrs. Fox-Angerer’s class is hard because it has an online portion, it creates stress, and it is a required class.
My action plan to be successful in college is straightforward I will succeed by completing a few simple steps which will guarantee my success in college and even my high school college classes. The effort I put in will determine whether or not I pass my college classes. I will need to attend class daily also participating will be important to passing and I will be completing my work correcting it and turning it in on time to maintain a good grade and succeed. Doing these things steps will most definitely push me in the direction to passing my college classes. I will need to stay motivated mentally and believe in myself. From this chapter I have learned a lot about myself and how to study. Before I never really understood the different ways I studied, I just knew what seemed to work. I now understand why those techniques were successful. Now that I am aware I am a mostly a visual learner, have an integrated brain, and have bodily-kinesthetic and logical-mathematical intelligence, I look forward to implementing the newly learned studying techniques with the old, making my college experience as successful as possible.
There are several qualities to have to be successful in college. These qualities can range from attending class to going above and beyond what’s expected. Success comes from the journey taken or the path chosen. Success also comes from being prepared. As a student, I must step up to the challenge and find the path to success along the way. Several ways I define success is to uphold academic integrity, have the ability to prioritize, and to motivate myself to stay on top of what needs to be accomplished.
Writing out the notes is one of the best ways to can take notes. When you write out notes, you use more of your brain, unlike when you type it out. According to Christine Currie, C.Ht., Writing, as opposed to typing when taking notes and learning material engages the idio motor response (IMR). The IMR is how your brain signals or creates a response to certain stimuli. When your hand and your brain (thought process) work together to carry out a task, such as writing when learning information, the eyes are also engaged and the sub-conscious becomes engaged as well. All of these elements respond to the stimuli as they experience it by creating synapses in the brain. These synapsis are like little highways that your thoughts, memories and ideas flow on. This course has helped me in many ways, especially time management, health, and money. Instead of having a very relaxing week and then panicking at the end of the week when everything is due, this course has helped me to plan out my studies. Planning them out helps me produce higher quality work and assists me with my stress problem. One thing that has helped a lot is getting short easy assignments or parts of assignments done in short periods of extra time I have. For example, instead of turning on that TV, wait ten minutes and knock out an assignment. Another asset for myself has been setting dates to have assignments done. Although these assignments may not be due on that day, getting them done and out of the way, makes more time for other
A recent failure that has changed how I go about my daily life is one that many college freshman experience in their first year. In high school I was a very good student, but I did not have to put in a lot of effort to get the grades that I wanted. I would joke with my friends and say that high school taught me how to put in the least amount of effort, and still get the maximum result. All of my teachers told me, as they did every student, that college was going to be different and if you do not put in more effort it would be very difficult. I knew this coming into school, but I am not sure if part of me wanted to prove people wrong, or if I actually was just adjusting to college life. I did not study as much as I should of, and as a result my grades suffered. Luckily I did not completely ruin my grade point average, but since first semester I have completely changed my study habits. This has taught a much needed lesson about hard work, and I am determined to never again fail at my studies. I am the kind of person that learns a lot from failures. My dad has always told me it is ok to make a mistake, but never make the same mistake twice. This I a motto that I live by.
As a first time college student I have come to realize that its takes hard work and dedication to be successful academically. In order to be successful there are many factors that will lead to a victorious academic career.
