What is the director ultimately saying about the ways in which hope affects the individual?
During the film Shawshank Redemption there is a very prominent theme of hope. Shawshank Redemption demonstrates positive and negative ways in which the main characters Andy, Brooks, Tommy and Red display hope. Through out the movie Frank Darabont gives us an insight to how each character connects to the theme of hope. Each character connects differently to hope. For example andy persevering through digging the tunnel, Red connects to hope by become friends with Andy, Tommy gets his high school diploma and finally Brook, although institutionalized became accustomed to being the librarian for many years of his life time in Shawshank prison

Society can be very cruel; hopes and dreams can become reality or vanish away into the shivering winds. It is important to maintain hope when life is crumbling around you and freedom is what humans strive for in order to execute what they please during their existence on earth. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King, is a clear example of freedom combined with hope, illustrated by the characters of Andy Dufresne and Red. Andy, like Red, never loses hope of leaving prison; furthermore they gain a sense of freedom when departing from Shawshank. Having beliefs, in addition to fighting for what you believe is right are virtues that help you to strive for success which ultimately, lets you reach for freedom and hope.
The theme for this dystopian characteristic is this; one can still have faith even when they don’t have a whole lot to be hopeful for.
According to the dictionary hope is thinking and wanting something to happen or be true (“Hope”). During difficult times hope can either be everywhere or completely lost. World War Two was a time in which it was almost impossible to find hope. It seemed as if every person had given up hope for a better life and future. But one person who seemed to bring hope in a hopeless place was Raoul Wallenberg. Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat and businessman in Hungary who saved the lives of countless Jews ("Raoul Wallenberg”). World War Two was filled with despair and tragedy, however that where people like Raoul Wallenberg who brought hope to Hungarian Jews and people today.
One’s ambition, when fueled by hope, can cause them to keep going when put in an adverse situation. When this occurs, it leaves a lasting effect on the individuals around them. In the film Shawshank Redemption by Frank Darabont, the main character Andy Dufrense experiences many hardships but perseveres through them using hope. Andy is placed in a situation that is out of his control and loses any hope he has at the beginning. Through the situations he faces, such as his encounters with the sisters, gaining funds for the library, and succeeding in his escape plan from the prison, Andy regains that hope which motivates his ambition to be free. Throughout the book there is a lot of characters who always have hope. In the book the one of policemen says, “Everyone saw Mrs. Cadaver. Nine hours after the bus rolled over, as all those stretches were being carried up the hill, and everyone despairing there was her hand coming up out of the window and everyone was shouting because there it was, a moving hand.” He glanced at me. I wish it had been your mother's hand” (256). This one important part of the book was talking about there is always hope it is important because the police were telling Sal the story of how the bus crashed and he was saying that he wished the moving hand was Sal’s mothers hand. Sal says, “I kissed true willow. “Happy birthday,” I said. In the sheriff's car, I said, “She isn’t actually gone at all. She’s singing in the trees” (254). This part of the story is important because she is saying that her mother isn’t actually gone she is in the singing tree singing because she doesn’t want to believe that her mother is not going to come back because she wanted to terry and get her to come back with her on her birthday so they can move back to Bybanks and be all together as a family again. It is an unparalleled force that one will hold onto in times of great difficulty. It makes it possible for people to be inspired by injustices, and it makes it possible for the change to occur without problems. Hope has the power to change many aspects of a person’s life, only if they allow it to. Many people with hope, that are united for one cause, are able to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks. Take the people of Berlin, Germany for example. With hope in their hearts, masses of people together were able to overcome a world power and bring down the Berlin Wall. This speaks volumes of all the possibilities hope provides for everyday
Luke and Andy, Though being the main characters in two different movies, display many similar character attributes throughout both of their films. Both starting out at the bottom of their respective food chains, worked their way up to become well known, and highly regarded members of their prisons. In both films, Shawshank Redemption, and Cool Hand Luke, hope rises from each of their sentences as they battle hardships, and overcome extreme circumstances. Simply just by never losing hope, they both became legends, and were continually talked about long after their departure from the prisons.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is extensively a story of hope. Hope is to wish for something with expectation of its fulfilment and to have confidence; trust. This is shown through the themes, issues and the characters in the novel. Atticus represents hope, he is optimist. He is from the higher class and defends the lower class and still has the anticipation to win. The Finch family has hope as Atticus has taught his children to be accepting and have open-minds. Racism and prejudice, give people the hope for change. For one day there be a world that is fair and equal. Hope comes in many shapes and forms, including the children, Atticus, and themes, akin to racism and prejudice, although hope present throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
Hope has the incredible ability to make or break someone. People are always told to make large goals in school and employment, and try to reach those ambitions no matter how far they are. Hope is the motivation behind accomplishing dreams, but it also has the ability to break people who have hoped for something so desperately, yet never came to fruition. Only determination and personal situations can persuade hope to fly or fall. A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly highlights this ambiguous hope we depend on through the use of symbolism, characterization, and inner conflict.
In The Maze Runner there are main different themes but I feel that hope is one of the bigger ones would be bravery.In the Maze Runner Thomas shows the most bravery out of everyone and he’s pretty much the newest member. Many times throughout the story Thomas goes into dangerous situations to help others even if that means risking his own life. Hope is the strong feeling of desire for something good to happen. Hope is a driving force in the progression of life. The idea of hope is powerful because it can lead to patience, courage, and happiness. Hope is an important concept in Cry, the Beloved Country. Hope is what the main character Stephen Kumalo must use to keep fighting for his beliefs, for his son, and for his tribe. The power of hope is one of the only things that people had to overcome apartheid in South Africa. If hope were not present, Stephen Kumalo may have gave up on restoring himself, his son, and his tribe. Hope is the concept that helps Stephen Kumalo and other characters develop during the span of the novel. Hope is found in the characters, the tribe, and the land.
In the sources used, the situations that are experienced seems like there is no hope to be found, only fear. Fear will protect us, we hope. Nevertheless, hope is everywhere no matter what. For World War II in The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne Frank is the secret annex’s hope. Anne Frank is a 13-year old girl that has the most hope of surviving the Nazi Invasion. All you can think is, “Ah, the Nazi’s are coming! Run for your lives!” That is what went through many minds during this time period, fear. Fear is a strong ally to have. You can worry all the time and no one will stop you. But, hope can be an even stronger ally, if you believe.

The “Hope” is optimism. Freedom from hope is freedom to your soul. You can no longer hurt yourself by living. It is hard to believe that being hopeless leads to living, but living is an imprisonment. We try to be the best we can be but does life limit us?
