“We fail to see human beings as human beings.” Often, humans are very narrow minded when it comes to being able to see things the way others might see them. We get lost in the notion of how we believe things should be done. This is where diversity comes into play. Diversity is nothing more than differences between people, their cultures, and their way of thinking. In the book, “Things Fall Apart,” diversity is illustrated between the characters, their religion, and the criminal justice system.
In the novel, “Things Fall Apart,” we meet a diverse group of characters. The main character, Oknokwo, is portrayed as brutal and violent, while Nwoye is very passive and tranquil. Oknokwo never shows emotion; on the contrary, Oknokwo fears failure and …show more content…

To elaborate, a good example is Mr. Brown and Mr. Smith, who are missionaries in Umuofia. These two men have the same goal, which is to convert the people from the Umuofia tribe into Christianity; however, each of them has a diverse way of thinking, causing them to handle situations in different ways. Mr. Brown is open to all people and their beliefs, so he tries to make everyone feel comfortable in their own skin by incorporating their religious beliefs into his own. This serves to make the converting process easier for them and due to these factors the Umuofia people respect him. When you are more open minded to what others believe you have an easier time relating and forming relationships with them. Opposite to him is Mr. Smith who sees things as black and white and to him black is considered “evil”. Mr. Smith is more traditional and less open minded when it comes to religion. Compared to Mr. Brown he goes by the book and likes to get things done a certain way. Mr. Smith is not interested in forming relationships with the people he is converting, instead he just wants to get it done. I believe that there would not have been a problem between the Christians and the Umuofia tribe if Mr.Smith had not been so traditional. Some are more open minded and flexible when it comes to certain things, while others prefer to be dead set on the rules. An example of this is people’s religious beliefs. Some Christians stray from their beliefs and go against what their religion says they should believe in; however, they still are considered Christian. For some individuals, yes, is yes and no, is no, while others are tolerant towards thinking outside the box. Some religious individuals interpret the bible verbatim and for instance, are not supportive of the LGBTQ+ community because it goes against what the bible says. On the other hand, some religious folk are not afraid to modernize what the bible may preach according to the era they are living in, making them more accepting towards those around them. This is much like Mr. Brown, who is willing to accept all people in his community. We don’t all have the same perspectives or viewpoints in life; however, at the end of the day we do have one thing in common, we are all
