ethic. Although a few students do an outstanding job of that, most students lack a good work ethic. Most students have to learn how to build a good work ethic because in high school, teachers give notes that follow the book very closely and tell them what they need to know. In college, students are expected to take their own notes from their textbooks from the professor's lectures, they need to interpret what they think is important on their own (grove par, 6). No more following direction from the teacher students will have to find out on their own what is important information. Conceptually this might be hard for some students because they will actually be forced to think and use their own brain to find out what is important. They also must …show more content…

There are plenty of reasons students drop out of school, but one key reason is they simply were not prepared well enough for college and the transition was to difficult from high school to college. NAEP test shows how college and career ready students are, and the results from the test show that less than 40% of students actually meet the standards to be college or career ready (Kamenetz 3). “In 2015 the graduation rate was 82%, not 40.” which means this leaves a sizeable amount of students with diplomas that are not college or career ready (Kamenetz 3). With statistics like 40% of students being unprepared for college it should not be a surprise we have such a high dropout rate in college, seven out ten Americans will study for bachelor's degree (Beckstead par. 3), while only two thirds of them will graduate. In 2015, sixteen industrialized countries scored higher than the United States in science, twenty-three had better scores than the U.S. in math (Wilde 1). The U.S. is used to being number one in at almost everything, but when it comes to academics, students are behind the rest of the world. The U.S. is behind in most of the key subjects such as math, science, and reading. Looking at the top countries in the world academically, we see there are some key differences. To get on the level of other countries, finding out what they are doing differently and starting to implement those things into our academic system will go a long way in getting U.S. students more prepared. Some key traits some of the top countries in the world share in education are as follows: School starts at seven years, no homework for young children, no exams until they turn 13, all classes are mixed ability, small size science classes, lots of break time every day, & teacher training to masters level, teacher training is paid for by government (Chantin 1). The U.S. shares absolutely none of those qualities with other countries. Furthermore, the United States has more issues academically and that is that some students are presented with better opportunities
