1.1 Introduction

Female entrepreneurship has long been associated with concepts such as female empowerment and emancipation. It is also been marked as important for improving the quality of life of women in the developing nations. Entrepreneurship is increasingly marked as an essential medium of growth, increase in production, innovating ideas and for generating employment, and it is broadly accepted as an essential aspect of economic dynamism. Reforming ideas into economic opportunities is the key issue of entrepreneurship. Past represents that economic progress has been generated by people who have entrepreneurial capabilities and are innovative, are eager to exploit opportunities and willing to take accept risks.
The role of entrepreneurship and an entrepreneurial culture has often been underestimated in economic and social development. Over the years, however, it has become increasingly reflected that entrepreneurship contributes to economic development of the country. Although, the majority of the enterprises were owned by men.
In other words, it was not common to see women owning businesses especially in the developing countries like India. The idea and practice of women entrepreneurship is a recent concept. A very little was known about women entrepreneurship both in practice and research till 1980’s. The entire phenomenon about women entrepreneurship and women owned run organizations is just the development of 1980s.

Economic Role: We have seen rural women working in the fields and farms from time immemorial. Women have been working to help their partners in small scale industries.
With the changing economic roles and responsibilities of women, particularly among the poor, making employment as means of survival. Male unemployment due to wage labour and high increment of urbanization have led to an increase in the number of married women workers. Due to low earnings of male, it often imposes double responsibilities on married females to compensate for the family. Women’s contribution to household income substitutes the way to meet basic needs of survival. Hence women’s contribution makes the health and nutritional level of members to get better.
