Sports or arts, what is more important to more students? If you ask them, the answers will vary depending on the individual, but it will sway more towards athletics. Fine arts programs are taking up too much of the budget given to high schools by the state. This problem is affecting the majority of public schools in the nation. There are far more benefits to funding the athletic programs than arts programs at high schools. Some of the money funding fine arts programs at high schools should be given to the athletic department because it promotes student involvement and increases school spirit. Even if a student is not on a sports team at the school, they are still able to stay involved by attending games and matches. Students who do not participate in fine arts are able to attend their events, but they typically have less than ten events per year whereas athletics has dozens. The fine arts events are also expensive to attend. Going to a play or musical could cost up to fifteen dollars for a student, and that is after the student discount. Sports events are free the majority of the time, so students are able to attend without even having to think about it costing them anything. Additionally, sporting events are positive for focusing on being social. When a student attends a basketball game, they are likely to make new friends or interact with those around them. However, when a student attends a choir concert, they sit in silence for an hour or two with those around them. It is true that sporting events can bring in a lot of money through concession stands, raffle tickets, and general admissions, but these funds do not add up to the amount spent on keeping these programs running. The school’s income is generally lower than the outgo which forces kids to do fundraising in order to play their favorite sports. Schools spend to much of their budget on sports that do not make an equal profit. After the school year is over, the school has spent more money on sporting events and less on educational purposes and supplies. School sports help relieve stress and provide a way for students to exercise, stay in shape, and have fun. Not only that, but school sports help kids develop good habits like working hard and being responsible. National Federation of State High School Activity Association's mission statement quotes that school sports promote "participation and sportsmanship". Their statement also says that sports help "develop good citizens through interscholastic activities which provide equitable opportunities, positive recognition and learning experiences to students while maximizing the achievement of educational goals." Is that not beneficial to young students?

Fine arts programs are programs in schools that are typically centered on both vocal and instrumental music, art, dance, and drama (Music and arts, 2002). These programs are responsible for the majority of entertainment in most public schools. Arts programs, which have always had a shaky existence in the public schools, are now making academic claims to encourage their school districts to keep them in the budget when money gets tight (Title I programs struggle for funding, 2003) . Although many of educational professionals link the overall achievement in school to these art programs, these programs are still in danger of becoming extinct if massive budget cuts continue.
