High School Sports: Worth the While According to a 2016 study, about 52% of all high schoolers in the United States play at least one sport. This is the 27th year there has been an increase in number of sports participants. This is due to the many benefits that out way the bad when it comes to high school sports. Every parent wants to see their kid hit a homerun or score the winning basket as the buzzer times out, but now they are wondering if it is all really good for their child. Teens should be involved in at least one high school sport because they help you build a community, provide more academic motivation, and help gain the appropriate amount of physical exercise needed to be healthy. Teens who join a high school sport see their teammates often. This opens them up to many potential friendships that can help create a support system and good memories. It’s important to join at least one sport, “Participating in sports gives athletes the ability to develop tight and lasting friendships with others who have common interests. Some people believe sports take away from the focus and diligence of school work. On the contrary, “Various data demonstrates that athletes have higher grade point averages, higher standardized test scores, better attendance, lower dropout rates, and a better chance of going to college,” (AOSSM). Athletes are trained to have discipline and give their all, all the time. Also, in many cases, in order to join a team you must have at least a passing grade, sometimes higher, in all your classes. The motivation to stay in school and get good grades increases significantly when you add sports as a goal kids have to work for to maintain (Bliss).
