“When can I play at the dentist again?” is one of the questions some kids ask their parents. Pediatric dentistry is a branch of dentistry that deals with the child’s teeth from the eruption of the first tooth until adolescence. Pediatric dentistry is crucial as it affects the health of lifetime teeth and the child’s thoughts towards dentists. Dentist’s Techniques and strategies: The child’s thoughts can be altered as soon as he enters the dental clinic. Receptionist and dental environment has a huge role as a relaxation factor to the child. Moreover, the dentist has the main role in either frightening the child or calming him down by various strategies. I. Nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation: The inhalation of nitrous oxide is a secured strategy and strong sedation that reduces anxiety and improves communication between the child and the dentist. Its effect is fast and reversible under certain circumstances. VII. General Anesthesia: If the child is extremely uncooperative and has several teeth to be treated, general anesthesia is the only substitute. General anesthesia is given in hospital since it is a state of unconsciousness and absence of physical and verbal intact with the child. This technique requires several instructions and conditions. Children Behavior: The child’s dental anxiety is mainly due to his ignorance to the dental instruments and treatment plan; in addition to lack of ability to control his fear that’s translated most of the time to crying and screaming. Child’s management of his behavior depends on his phase of development, he can be either supportive, potentially supportive, or not having the ability to be supportive (pre-cooperative).
