Nitrous oxide is administered via a face mask and is used to take the edge off of your nerves. This form of sedation is great for uncomplicated procedures and for patients experiencing only mild levels of fear or anxiety. If you fall into this category, nitrous oxide sedation may be for you.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is our next highest level of sedation. This form of sedation is administered via a small pill and must be taken before the office visit in order to have time to take effect. This means that you will need assistance with transportation to and from the office. This medication offers a moderate level of sedation, often leaving the patient very relaxed or even groggy. Oral conscious sedation is great for more complicated procedures and patients who have a higher level of fear or anxiety.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is reserved for our most complicated procedures and patients with very high levels of fear and anxiety. IV sedation creates a sleep-like state that allows you to wake up from a procedure with no memory of the sights, smells, sounds, or sensations that occurred during the treatment. During a Labiaplasty, patients receive anesthesia to ensure they remain comfortable throughout the procedure. This procedure can be performed while the patient is awake using just local anesthesia. The two other forms of anesthesia include IV sedation and general anesthesia. IV sedation, commonly referred to as ‘twilight,’ is usually the method Dr. Guillot prefers; while, general anesthesia frequently causes nausea, post-op drowsiness, endotracheal post-surgical effects and vomiting, twilight sedation does not. Once the patient is sedated, the Labiaplasty begins.
Dentistry as a profession over the years has evolved rapidly in light of new scientific evidence. Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). This is supported by the General Dental Council who state all clinicians must maintain their professional knowledge and competence throughout their working career (REF).
Individuals in this situation often benefit from sedation dentistry. With several forms available, a dentist and patient can together determine which option is most appropriate for a person's anxiety level.
Many people are anxious about going to the dentist. Their fear is so severe that they would rather bear the pain than opting for dental treatment. This fear and phobia of dentists are not new but today, because of improvement in technology, skill, and training, dental procedures can be performed with minimal pain.

Healthcare is a necessity to sustain society. Dentistry is an area of healthcare that I feel extremely passionate about because access to proper dental care is limited, especially in the underserved communities. As an African American, I want to become a dentist and healthcare provider in the hopes of helping patients and adding to the diversification of the field. With a growing minority population in the United States, it has become apparent that there is a shortage of black dentists. This is problematic because underrepresented minorities are in great need of access to culturally connected dentists who understand their clinical needs as much as their lives and their challenges. It's important for any high school student to have an idea or plan of what they want to pursue in the near future. Most students want to go into the medical field, become a professional athlete, a lawyer, etc. Many talk about becoming a dentist, but not a dental assistant. Simply because they feel like it's not that big of a title of being a dental assistant as compared to a dentist. Little do they know dental assistants play a big role as well in the office. A dental assistant does many tasks and duties that help benefit the dentist and also the patients.
Nitric Oxide (NO) is an inhaled gas that works via relaxation of the smooth muscles to dilate the blood vessels most commonly in the lungs (drugs.com, 2015). It is a blend of NO and Nitrogen and is used as a treatment for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) (Kumc.edu, 2015). This essays purpose is to inform about how it works, the uses for treatment, the type of patients most likely to benefit from NO, how it’s delivered, dosage, and also the hazards and complications that may come about when treating with NO.
Anesthesia is used in almost every single surgery. It is a numbing medicine that numbs the nerves and makes the body go unconscious. You can’t feel anything or move while under the sedative and are often delusional after being taken off of the anesthetic. Believe it or not, about roughly two hundred years ago doctors didn’t use anesthesia during surgery. It was rarely ever practiced. Patients could feel everything and were physically held down while being operated on. 2It wasn’t until 1846 that a dentist first used an anesthetic on a patient going into surgery and the practice spread and became popular (Anesthesia). To this day, advancements are still being made in anesthesiology. 7The more scientists learn about molecules and anesthetic side effects, the better ability to design agents that are more targeted, more effective and safer, with fewer side effects for the patients (Anesthesia). Technological advancements will make it easier to read vital life signs in a person and help better decide the specific dosages a person needs.
Patients feel fear not so much from the actual pain but from the lack of control that they feel lying in a dental chair. That creates a lot of anxiousness in some patients, as they don’t feel helpless. Most dentists continue treating all patients in a similarly assuming that they all have similar pain level and will handle the procedure in the same way. Dentists should be mindful of their patient’s level of tolerance and make them aware of the entire procedure ahead of time so that they are able to handle the unexpected situations. They should take time to ensure that the patient feels comfortable at every step. Introduction: In Canada, general dental health is not part Canada’s national system of health insurance (Medicare) (1) except for some dental surgical procedures that are performed at hospitals. Since Oral health does not come under the Health Act about ninety-five percent of the oral health care services are offered on a fee-for-service basis. Oral health care is under provincial or territorial jurisdiction like other health care services and publically financed dental care programs provide the remaining five percent of oral health care services (2). Thus, majority of Canadians receive oral health via privately owned dental clinics. Privately owned dental care gives these services providers control over dental service charges, types of available treatment for the patients and number of follow-up appointment for treatments or routine care.
