Over the past years, Americans have continued to double or even triple how much they weigh in the past two decades. Nearly two-thirds of Americans have been diagnosed as obese. “Nearly 78 million adults and 13 million children in the United States deal with the health and emotional effects of obesity every day” (American Heart Association). Millions of Americans have suffered from obesity due to portion sizes increasing in size, not getting the sufficient amount of exercise needed daily, or electronics getting in the way of people going outside and doing exercise. Type two diabetes, heart disease, bone joint disease are some of the side effects of being obese. This has caused the waistbands of Americans have enlarged. “Over the past few decades, portion sizes of everything from muffins to sandwiches have grown considerably. Unfortunately, America’s waistbands have reached accordingly” (Monte). The increase in portion sizes, unfortunately have caused the population of America to become more obese over the last two decades. In fact, fast food places have increased their quantity by at least twice the size. The fast food places seem to convince their customers that they’re are eating less calories than they actually are, this causing most people to order the same thing twice. “Not only are servings getting larger, some top fast-food chains are engaged in a sleight-of-name game — marketing ploys which could confuse customers who think they're ordering less than they actually are…” (Young). Fast food places have continued to advertise their food using this method, thus causing people to get twice as much as they usually ate, leading to the customers getting twice as much calories needed. This may not seem like a problem at first;however, when the customer consuming this meal doesn’t get the sufficient amount of exercise needed, it would likely cause them to gain
