Clavicle Fracture (Distal End) With Rehab

The clavicle, also called the collarbone, is the long bone that connects your shoulder to your rib cage. You can feel your collarbone at the top of your shoulders and rib cage. A distal clavicle fracture is a break (fracture) that occurs in the outer third of the clavicle, near the joint between the collarbone and one of the shoulder bones (acromion). This is a common injury that can happen at any age.
If the fracture extends into the joint at the top of the shoulder, it may also cause damage to the connective tissues (acromioclavicular ligament and coracoclavicular ligament) that attach the clavicle to the shoulder bone.

CAUSES
Common causes of a clavicle fracture include:
• A direct blow to your shoulder.
• Bruising, swelling, and tenderness over your clavicle.
• A grinding noise when you try to move your shoulder.
• A bump over your clavicle.

DIAGNOSIS
Your health care provider can usually diagnose a clavicle fracture by asking about your injury and examining your shoulder and clavicle. He or she may take an X-ray to determine the position of your clavicle.

TREATMENT
Treatment depends on the position of your clavicle after the fracture:
• If the broken ends of the bone are not out of place, your health care provider may put your arm in a sling or wrap a support bandage around your chest (figure-of-eight wrap).
• If the broken ends of the bone are out of place, you may need surgery. Surgery may involve placing screws, pins, or plates to keep your clavicle stable while it heals. Healing may take about 3 months.
When your health care provider thinks your fracture has healed enough, you will do physical therapy to regain normal movement and build up your arm strength.

HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
• Apply ice to the injured area:
○ Put ice in a plastic bag.
○ Place a towel between your skin and the bag.
○ Leave the ice on for 20 minutes, 2–3 times a
