Too much homework can lead to negative effects in learning. Together teachers and parents have a responsibility to make sure their students and children are staying on top of their academic responsibilities, but too much homework can have a negative effect on their desire to want to learn in the classroom.
As long as there has been school, homework and the amount of it has been a controversy among teachers, parents, and students. All across America, the average school day for children ranges from the lowest number of hours being 6.24 to the highest number of hours being 7.17. However, it was found that Kindergarten and 1st graders are spending anywhere from 25-30 minutes a night on homework. (Wallace)
As most adults work similar hours to a school schedule, which is typically 8 am to 3 pm, imagine coming home from work and having to work 3-4 more hours on tasks you were not able to complete at work. It is difficult for adults, even more so children, to remain focused after already putting in such a long day. As we all know, children begin school while their brains are still developing. Playing and getting exercise is crucial to your health and can cut down on childhood obesity which could also help prevent it in adulthood. Exercise, movement, any physical activity will have a direct impact on the behavior and the development of the brain. It’s simple really, increased oxygen flow to the brain aids in focus and function, exercise increases brain neurotransmitters. Any of these that will increase the ability of the brain, is an obvious benefit to learning and growing as a student. Many schools are cutting physical education in order to support a more rigorous academic schedule even though there have been studies to prove this theory
