As humans, we are continually communicating with each other. With verbal and written words, humans can express love, hate, pain, and countless other emotions. According to Huber (2014), communication is defined as the process in which information is conveyed from person to person. Hence, communication is vital for any successful human interaction. In the same way, the method that health care professionals, nurses, and nurse leaders, use to communicate with each other is vital to the successful delivery of patient care. Not only do nurses communicate with patients, they also routinely communicate with other health care professionals. Ideally, the team should consist of providers involved in resources needed for discharge. To not only construct the team, but to also facilitate the critical pathway, Nurse Parra should use communication as a key strategy for the pathway implementation. At the core of effective communication is the fundamental uses of persuasion, negotiation, and bargaining (Huber, 2014). Consecutively, persuasion can be utilized by Nurse Parra to alter the preconceived ideas of others through arguments and appeal to logic. The communication method of persuasion could be used to change the minds of the physicians who have voiced that they will not follow any plan created by nurses. As Nurse Parra builds a rapport with the physicians and includes them in the planning process, the negative ideals could be altered. Effective communication can also be accomplished through negotiation. This approach takes a problem, and through group discussions, an agreement is made. Tactics can be utilized by nurses to seamlessly remove the barriers that separate nurse and physicians. According to Eggertson (2012), improving relationships between nurses and physicians include opening and improving communication. Therefore, to improve the relationship between the aloft physicians and the nurse leadership team, Nurse Parra must include the physicians in the planning and implementation stage. Next, to assure the whole health care is willing to implement the critical pathway plan, Nurse Parra should consult and recruit ideas and approval from any leaders above herself. The scenario does not tell the reader whether the pathway plan has been approved by the facility head; therefore, Nurse Parra needs to gain the approval for financial funding, idea backing, and implementation support. High-performing facilities include those who gain support for improvement projects through the proper channels so patient care can be approved (Talbott, Watson, Tariman, & Sorenson, 2017). Nurse Parra should also assure that the dietary representative is contacted to assure that there is an open flow and communication between the nurses and dietary personnel. If dietary protocols are to be used by the nursing staff, dietary should relay what their interactions will be in the planning and when and how they can be contacted for any assistance
