Historical Overview of Higher Education in India
Introduction
India is advancing towards economic prosperity, and a key element to this prosperity is contributed by higher education. It is essential to analyze the contributions made by higher education towards India’s economic growth. It would be incomplete to examine the overall growth in education without referring to the radical changes in the different time periods of history. India is the second most populous country in the world with over one billion people as its citizens. There are more than 700 universities and 35,000 colleges which enrol more than 20 million students hence proving that the Indian Education System is multi-faceted and complex.(Choudaha, 2013)
Internationally recognized institutes such as IIM and IIT equip students with essential skills. However, very few institutes provide international quality education and possess the necessary skill set demanded by the employer. The ‘Top 4’ fields of study are: Arts, Commerce and Management , Engineering, Technology and Sciences.(UGC, 2013)
The complex and multi-dimensional system of education in India started in the Vedic period, followed by its transition during the colonial period. During the post independence period the literacy rates rose significantly. Currently, India is in a boom stage of education. This report highlights that higher education has been a long academic tradition in India.

1.The Vedic Period( 1750BCE- 500 BCE)
The Vedic period commenced when the Aryans invaded India. The texts from the Vedic period laid a foundation to literature in India. The language used in this period was pure Sanskrit. The Archaeological Survey of India classified Vedic literature into four parts (The Hindu, 1919):
