While looking through a local Wal-mart’s selection of infant and toddler toys I was pleasantly surprised. Walking through the door I assumed there would be less of a section of toys meant for the age groups of toddlers and infants and a huge selection of cheap plastic with a picture of a baby slapped on it. Most of the toys marked infant and toddlers were easy grip toys. Most of the said easy grip toys were rings big enough for and adult to clutch in their hands but still about the same size as a doughnut. Some of the rings were made of soft fabric and filled with batting, hard plastic, and soft flexible plastic. These toys allow infants to more easily grasp they using the ulnar grip and even allows them an easier time practicing their voluntary reaching. The rattle on the inside will help the baby feel like they have a sense of control, when they baby moves the toy they will hear the rattling sound and soon will connect the dots possibly thinking “ hey when I move this toy I this noise”. Another benefit of these easy benefit of these toys is some have faces not human faces but animal faces, however the set up of the eyes, nose, and mouth were set up the same as a humans face would be. One specific toy I examined was a soft fabric easy grip rings called “Grin&grow” and has an age group of zero months and up. It had a face of a bear with the same set up as a humans but had two ears sitting on top of its head. Inside the part of the ring they used as the head is a rattle needed to give the infant a sense of control. Another positive of toy is opposite of the toy is opposite the the head is two different types of fabric sewn together to create the grip of the toy, I consider this a positive because it gives the infant two different textures to play with. According to lecture on September 19th by one month of age infants are able to match recognize the way an object looks by what the texture on it is. To accommodate this the creators of this teething ring had different parts of the ring be different textures.
