Have you ever wondered why so many settlers died in the Jamestown settlement? In the Jamestown settlement they faced many problems like diseases and the Powhatans. I think most of the settlers died because of diseases, the Indians, and the people they brought to settle in Jamestown. The English settled in Jamestown in 1607. The goal when they came to Jamestown was to find riches. When the English got to America they had many troubles living there. One of the troubles was lack of water and food. Many of the settlers died from starvation and dehydration. Most of the people in the colonies died from a mysterious death. In the first shipload of people they had about 104 people on board that ship. Many of those people died from diseases they picked up from exploring. In the summer of 1607 a sickness kills half the people that settled there. (Document E) This was a major downfall for the colonies because most of those people were Probably gentlemen and labourers (Document C). Also in the summer of 1609 and 1610 60 settlers died from a disease. Many of these people who died were laborers and gentlemen. Many of these people speaded these diseases to other people and food they shared (Nightmare in Jamestown.). I think some of these diseases could be the Bubonic plague or the black death. These diseases returned in Nov.-May 1610 when 110 colonist die from famine and diseases. Next, Many of the deaths in the Jamestown settlement were caused by the Powhatans. When the English got there the Powhatan’s had 6 settlement 10 miles from the settlement Jamestown. Also the Powhatans had 8 settlements less than 5 miles away from the James River. (Document A) When the English had just settled there 12 days after they arrived the Indians had killed 2 men died. Also, in Aug.-Oct. The Powhatans kill 100 men which is nearly half the population.
