Imagine yourself saving animals one day at a time. It might be hard, but you will get that amazing feeling of knowing you did something good for someone else. Veterinarians are a key role in society now a day. People don’t realize all the good they do for the public. Duties, tasks, qualities, salary, benefits, attire, education, and working conditions are major components in deciding whether you could do this job. There are a variety of duties and tasks that veterinarians do. Since they never know what they will be doing that day they have to always be prepared for whatever walks in the door. People think that they just check over an animal and tell the owner what they are doing well and what they need to fix, but veterinarians do much more. They have to determine diseases, prescribe medications, prevent diseases, collect data from animals, interpret new problems, set bones, dress wounds, and many more things that. The list goes on and on because they never know what they need to do. Those are some of the simpler things this occupation has to handle. More of the complex tasks of this job would be delivering newborn animals, performing surgery, interpreting x-rays, and many more things that are also too extensive to include. These are just things that involve solving the problems of animals. Most people don’t realize that veterinarians have to attend lectures, conferences, and meetings so they can continue learning about new things they need to preform. To be a Veterinarian certain qualities are needed to be successful. They are usually natural born qualities. One of the main qualities a Veterinarian needs to have is problem solving. They are faced with new problems every day and they need to use their prior and current knowledg... ... middle of paper ... ...arians work on finding cures for diseases, new treatments, and more efficient ways to do their job. Schedules for veterinarians are very hectic. They often work long hours starting early in the morning and ending late at night. There will also be emergency calls constantly because people obviously can’t predict when their animals are going to get hurt or sick. The average amount of work is 40 to 50 hours per week. Now that I have researched this occupation I would be very interested. The idea of traveling different places to work seems like the perfect day. Also the salary and benefits seem like they would be right for me. A lot of the things about this career were pretty predictable except for the education. I didn’t know you needed so much education to be a veterinarian. I really liked researching this job and I can see myself working in this field in my future!
Vet Tech has always been an option for me, helping animals is something that is very interesting. It was introduced in 1989, the AVMA officially adopted the name “Vet Tech.” In 1998, emergency vets debut on Animal Planet. And in 2008, student population grows from 500 to 700. There are about 17,000 people employed in the career field chosen. Some of the common trends of the job would be, working at Zoos, Aquariums, Boarding Kennels, and Wildlife sanctuaries. These jobs are usually found working in an animal clinic or hospitals and sometimes at farms because that is the “normal” areas for this occupation. In this career there are some general duties such as: Observe animals behavior and conditions, Provide nursing care, Bathe animals, Clip nails, groom animals hair, keep animals calm during exams or procedures. The more specific duties of the job would be to: take x-rays of animals and develop them, get utensils and prepare the animals for surgery, keep and record patient's history. Most of the clinics are open 24 hours. There is not anything that is unusual about the number of hours/nature of the job. (Bls.gov.vettech)
For this project, I decided to take on the career of a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, I would have to examine animals to diagnose their health problems, treat and dress wounds, perform surgery on animals, test for and vaccinate against diseases, operate medical equipment(x-ray machines, etc.), advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments, prescribe medication, and euthanize animals. To get a job in this profession, you have to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. You also have to have to take many science classes including biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, zoology, microbiology, and animal science. You would have to take about four years of college which adds up to about $100,000 dollars in student
The average annual salary is 93,250 dollars, they work 24 hours for 365 days of the year, they work in equine facilities, horse stables, and pastures. Being an equine vet can be mentally and physically draining of energy so know how to be patient before getting into the practice.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
For someone to be a large animal veterinarian and do the job well, one must have a passion for animals. You must have business skills and interpersonal skills. You need a passion for animals because you will work with them everyday for the
Sometimes the clients can be difficult to work with. Working in this field is also very fast paced. Communicating to the clients is a large part of this occupation. It is my job to tell them any reactions their animal may have after receiving vaccinations, medication, etc. I also assist with surgeries, perform dentals, perform physical exams, as well as assisting the veterinarian with any help he/she needs.
When I was growing up and always playing with animals, I realized what I might want to do with my life. Since animals are, for the most part, vulnerable and helpless, they need someone to take care of them. For animals in need to survive and carry on, there must be a caring person willing to take time out of their day to care for these animals. This person is responsible for providing care such as feeding, cleaning, giving water and administering medication to animals in veterinary offices, zoos, laboratories or animal hospitals. This person is called a veterinary assistant (Writer).
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Dr. Crosby, my days will be starting quite early because most animals will probably be arriving from an overnight emergency facility. Therefore, requiring urgent care. If a pet needs surgery, they would be immediately admitted. Dr. Crosby says, “I like to do surgery as early in the day as possible.” Then, I’d be required to go over any of those emergency cases with another doctor. After which, I’ll need to tend to other important duties. Including prior patients and discussing certain emergency cases with their owners. Then, I would need to proceed with any scheduled appointments/surgeries. The more frequently seen appointments would include: vaccinations, neutering, spaying, teeth cleanings and sadly euthanasia. My top priority would always be that animal and making sure they are stable. So, I may need to work additional hours, nights and even weekends. At the end of my day, I’ll still be thinking of the animals and of their owners. The way I see it, a doctor's work is never truly
While many people understand the importance of veterinary clinics and veterinary hospitals when it comes to taking care of their pets and livestock, what people often overlook is that while the veterinarian themselves are very important to the welfare of the animals, the veterinary technicians and assistants play an equally important role. Without the help from a vet assistant and technicians, a veterinarian would not be able to perform their duties as quickly and efficiently as they do, since they would have to take the extra time to deal with all of the smaller, yet very important jobs that go into this field. This would result in taking up crucial and useful time for the veterinarian. According to American Veterinary Medical Association (or AVMA), “all veterinary
I have had the privilege of getting hands-on experience. I have intubated animals for surgery, assisted in surgery pre-medication procedure, and placed intravenous catheters. My passion for this field has grown stronger while practicing these daily tasks required by veterinarians. I have drawn blood and set up blood work along with heartworm tests. I have set up fecal and ear cytologies followed by reading them on a microscope. I have assisted in radiographs and observed the films. I have witnessed various types of surgeries from spay and neuter to a splenectomy. I have assisted in euthanasia of animals. When I became employed at Copeland’s, I was hired as a kennel staff. My job duties in the kennel include cleaning the kennel, walking dogs, giving medication to hospitalized patients, and feeding and watering animals. I am still able to assist in the lab when needed, therefore, I can still gain experience in surgery preparation and running various test in the lab. I am able to assist in exam rooms with a veterinarian and observe how to provide proper care for the patient as well as observe interactions with the owner. I have learned how to discuss treatment plans, day to day care, and general medication instructions with owners from a veterinary standpoint. Being a veterinarian requires not only meeting the needs of the animal
“I hope to make people realize how totally helpless animals are, how dependent on us, trusting as a child must that we will be kind and take care of their needs... [They] are an obligation put on us, a responsibility we have no right to neglect, nor to violate by cruelty.” (“Famous veterinarian quotes.”) Ever since I was younger, I’ve wanted to be a veterinarian. At a young age, I fell in love with animals especially horses. As I got older, and started to look at future careers, I realized that I wanted to go into an animal science career. Because I want to make a difference in the world, I decided that I wanted to be a veterinarian. Animals need us and most of them depend on us. I want to help them in a way I know veterinarians can. The career I’m interested in is being a veterinarian; I must get an Associate’s degree; I must get into North Carolina State University, the only college in North Carolina that provides a veterinarian school; I must keep my grades up to be considered at NC State University.
I believe as a veterinary technician some of the task that I would be doing on a daily basis would be drawing blood, taking tissue samples, assisting in surgery, managing anesthesia, giving medications, and doing lab test. My experience with nursing animals back to life is an intrinsic part of who I am, and gives me great satisfaction. I grew up with working with animals. Working with animals is part of who I am. My love and care for them run deep just like my Grandmother and Mother.
Having built a connection with each animal, I have come to the realization that becoming a vet would allow me to find joy in what I do. Therefore, I want to be able to uphold the standards of professionalism, be honest in all professional interactions with
Qualities that I believe are needed to be a good veterinarian are patience and tact, assertiveness, humility, and the capacity to think critically. The first two attributes are essential when having to explain something complex and announce bad news to pet owners. They are also put to use when doing lengthy or delicate procedures and when restraining animals properly to avoid harming them. Assertiveness allows owners to trust that you are making the best decisions. This quality is also essential because it keeps you from hesitating too much when a choice must be made under pressure. This decisiveness should be balanced out with sufficient humility to allow one to know when to pass a case on to a more qualified expert. It is also the trait that
In conclusion Veterinarians have to be multi talented not only do they have to get degrees and find colleges. Veterinarians also have to find jobs and know what the job pursues. Veterinarians are important to society because without a Veterinarian animals wouldn't heal or get better and many medical discoveries for animals might not be found. Without Veterinarians animals would not get better if an animal is sick.
