I consider myself a Democrat so I have always seen the Republican party in a bad light. This past year as I have started to pay even more attention to politics since I will be voting for the first time this year and I would like to be informed when I do. If you're following the campaigns, or even if your not then it is impossible not to miss the train wreck that is Donald Trump. I will never understand how he made it so far when he is the punchline of every political joke. Even with his bigoted views, extreme ignorance of his own privilege, as in the case of (“my father gave me a small loan of a million dollars,"(Diamond). and total lack of government experience he is still seen as a plausible option for president. Is he worse or better than Donald Trump? While many Republicans believe he worse is I’m not sure I agree. The only reason that Republicans seem to dislike him is the fact that he called them names and their feeling were hurt. Honestly, though the answer doesn’t matter, the real issue is that this question must be asked, people picking the future president based off who could do less damage. I’m not the only one who considered this question, do a quick search for “is Cruz worse than Trump?” on google and you will see tons of articles with the same name. It’s strange to see such conflict in a party not over who’s better but who’s least bad. This is proof that the Republican party is failing in this election cycle as Nate Silver suggested.
There is another option left for conservatives who aren't as extreme as Trump or willing to settle for Cruz. Peter Beinart of the Atlantic, even suggested that liberals vote for Rubio in the GOP primaries in order to ensure that Trump does not get the Republican nomination. Beinart argues that Rubio unlike Trump “respects the Constitution.”(Beinart) Many Democrats may believe that it doesn’t matter if Trump is nominated because there’s no way Trump will win the election and will split the republican party.
