The most remarkable thing about literature is its effect on society and the individual. Every once in a while a book is published that truly relates to those who read it. Divergent just so happens to be one of those books. Divergent is an extreme take on the differences of what virtues humans value to form the perfect society. The book’s contents are almost philosophical, acting as sustenance for the heart and soul, meanwhile highlighting the many problems we face in modern society through quotes in a subliminal fashion that coincide wonderfully with the story. One such quote can be found on pg.441 and it reads ‘’ Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again.’’ It almost breaks the 3rd wall. Human beings were born with both flaws and goodness. We are a double edged sword with extreme potential on both points. Deep down there is something dark in everybody. Tris learns that she is Divergent(owning more than one faction trait) and must decide what type of person she is, while keeping her divergence a secret. Divergent is frowned upon by the stereotypical leaders in the story and could be dangerous. The Erudite leader Jeanine was too selfish to realize that unique people such as Divergent are the ones who would solve the mystery of their unique lives.

Eric displays his courage in many different ways. Eric puts his life in danger every day by lying to the faction he leads, communicating with his leader, and through the acts he commits every day. Throughout the book you see Eric’s cunning and bravery displayed over and over again. He talks very tactfully and hides his true intentions well. You can see that Eric is through and through, Erudite. Even though he belongs to a different faction, he is a leader of Dauntless. It can be assumed that Four’s and Eric’s trainers were just as hard as Eric and Four themselves. The trainers must have been clever, clever enough to see that Eric was not what he said he was. Eric was a spy, the first pawn played in Jeanine’s elaborate scheme to take over all five factions. He never faltered once and continued on, knowing that if he was caught, his punishment would be far worse than death. Every day Eric lied to the faces of the Dauntless leaders even though he knew the consequences. He did it to save his true faction, Erudite.
