The Diary of Anne Frank The Diary of Anne Frank is a diary written by a young girl from the holocaust. Anne and her jewish family hid out in a secret annex for nearly two years. The secret annex was in the building that Anne’s father owned, hidden behind a bookcase. They were hiding from the Nazi soldiers. If they were found, they would be taken to work or concentration camps and killed. Whether they were gassed, starved, or worked to death, the Nazi’s wanted them all dead. The holocaust was the mass murder of six million jews, gypsies, people deemed ‘unworthy’, and anyone who wasn’t considered apart of the ‘master race’. Her diary gave us an inside look on what it felt like to live during this horrible time. Anne Frank and her family were in hiding for two years. “Look at us, hiding out for two years.” says a character from the story. Anne’s father owned a business and in his office of the building, there was a hidden door behind a bookcase. Behind the door there was a staircase that led to the annex. When the Franks went into hiding, it was rumoured that they had fled to Switzerland. But the Franks were not alone. In the annex, Anne, Margot, Mrs. Frank, Mr. Frank, Mr. Van Daan, Mrs. Van Daan, Peter, and Mr. Dussel all lived together. They had very little food and they had to be very cautious at all times. During the day, they weren’t allowed to make a sound. They couldn’t even flush the toilet because it put them at risk of being heard. In the Annex there were only 4 rooms. One room for Anne and Mr. Dussel, one for Margot and Mr. and Mrs. Frank, One for Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, and Peter stayed in a very tiny room. When Anne, her family, and the others lived in the annex, it was hard for them. They got irritable quite regularly, but wouldn’t you if you lived in a very small ‘apartment’ with 7 other people? They had no outside contact except for Miep and Mr. Kraler. Miep and Mr. Kraler brought them food, essentials, magazines, and both bad and good news. Martin asked us whether our similarities or differences were more important. My answer then was the same as it is now. I think your differences are far more important than your similarities. I know it sounds cliche and I know it sounds like everyone says this, but what’s the point of so many people in the world if they’re all the same? If everyone does the same things and acts the same way, then we’re all the same people. I know differences caused the Holocaust and it was a very horrible thing. But if people like the Jews didn’t stand up and own their religion, we wouldn’t have the independence like we have today. If we all followed the same pattern, there wouldn’t be all of the new things and new discoveries like we have now. I think similarities are things people strive for, especially at a young age, like our age. But differences make us stand out. They give us different personalities. We need differences. We don’t want to live in a world of robots. So I stand with my
