ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS Introduction 12. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, consists of two groups of islands at the southeastern edge of the Bay of Bengal. The peaks of a submerged mountain range, the Andaman Islands, and the Nicobar Islands, form an arc stretching southward around 950 km between Myanmar and the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The arc constitutes the boundary between the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Andaman Sea to the east. Port Blair (on South Andaman Island) is the capital of the Union Territory. These picturesque undulating islands are covered with dense evergreen forests and varieties of exotic flora and fauna. Most of these islands are in the Andaman Group, 24 of which are inhabited. In the Nicobar group 13 islands are inhabited. 13. Geographical Disposition. The Andaman group comprises about 572 islands, sub-divided into North, Middle, and South Andaman, known collectively as Great Andaman. Little Andaman in the south is separated from the Nicobar Islands by the Ten Degree Channel, which is about 145 km wide. The Nicobar Group consists of Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Katchall, Nancowry and Great Nicobar. The Islands are closer to a number of South East Asian countries than the Indian mainland. Topography. The terrain of the Andaman group of islands is undulated, with hills enclosing narrow longitudinal valleys. The coral-fringed coasts of the islands are deeply indented, forming safe harbours and tidal creeks. The terrain of the Nicobar group of islands is more diverse than that of the Andaman. Some of the Nicobar Group of Islands, such as Car Nicobar, have flat coral-covered surfaces with offshore coral formations. Other islands, such as Great Nicobar are hilly and contain numerous fast-flowing streams. Therefore, these islands provide numerous options for creation of mega harbours/ trans-shipment terminals, Special Economic Zones/ Economic centres and fisheries processing
