Lying is a very despicable thing to do. Why is it people feel the need to lie? When a person lies there are consequences that both parties fall victim to. First, the liar feels ashamed and the victim feels their trust has been broken. The idea of trust is a valuable trait in a relationship. Trust will fail when lying occurs. A lie is a lie, no matter the reasons why it is said. What is a lie? There are many ways to define a lie; simply put a lie is something stated to another person where the information relayed is false. There are many underlying reasons that an individual may lie for. The idea of being punished is probably the main reason a child would lie to a parent. Even if the child knows the punishment is going to be worse if the lie is found out, they will still lie because they are worried about now and not later. This happens even at an older age as well. Lying is not a trait the humans are born with; no part of the brain is predisposed for truth or deception. Critically, truth proportion affected behavioral responding in the Sheffield lie test: Frequent lying made lying easier whereas frequent truth telling made lying more difficult” (Verschuere 909). The conditions for lying even if not inherent to us can be learned though what children may see or hear from parents. Children start learning from parents right away in life. Hilts states, “that when a child learns that parents can’t possibly be everywhere and know everything, it becomes easier to lie because there is no possible way for the parents to find out” (255). If a child catches a parent in a lie enough times, it is certain the child will start to believe it is okay to lie, especially when the parent never gets in trouble for it.
