The word lying has been part of our vocabulary since the beginning of time. Is there such a thing as a little lie or a white lie? Many believe telling white lies are not harmful, or speaking part truth and part lie is ok. However, a lie is a lie and it can harm the person telling it or the individual(s) receiving it. Measheimer’s video lecture focuses on the Bush administration and the lies told the public during his time in office. Bush administration told lies not for their personal gain, but believed it was in the best interest of the nation to go to war against Iraq and bring down Saddam Hussein. This is a strategic lie. When a leader has his own interest at heart, it’s a selfish lie, and lies that a leader tells because they think it’s best for national interest, are strategic lies (Measheimer, 2012).

There has been a strain with government relationship with the public. Society is looking for trustworthy and honesty leaders. There is a need for achievement, power and affiliation. A need to be on top McClelland (1961) says, the need for a sense of mastery over one’s environment and successful accomplishment through one’s own abilities and efforts; a preference for challenges involving moderate risk, clear feedback about success, and ability to sense personal responsibility for success.
