DECISION MAKING GRID The success of group decision making depends on the people who are engaged in the process of decision making. The decision makers come across a lot of problems which requires different types of decision making processes. In this course, they might find themselves taking the same decisions over and over again. Different decision makers have different styles of decision making. If more people are involved in taking a decision, the better will be the outcome of the solution. The main issue in group decision making is to find a strategy to tackle the problem. ORIENTATION OF THE GRID The two dimensions of the managerial grid are at right angles to each other. The horizontal axis of the grid represents concern for adequacy of decision experienced by the decision makers. The vertical axis represents concern for commitment of others which is experienced by individuals when working on a group decision making task. Each axis is scaled from 1 to 9. It reflects the degree of concern that is possessed by the individual. The value 1 denotes minimal concern. The value 9 denotes maximum concern. SELF SUFFICIENT DECISION MAKING The lower right end of the grid represents self-sufficient decision making style. The position is 9/1. This decision making style has a maximum concern for decision adequacy. It has a minimal concern for commitment of people. This style assumes that group is not an adequate place to take decisions and that group decisions always lead to creating more problems rather than solving them. Decision makers with self-sufficient style are confident decision makers. They are very much satisfied with their own assessment off the problem. He is person with strong attitude and has a clear and distinct thought. He selects the best available solution to the problem.
