I have come to an understanding that a “sport” is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment, yet only typical “sports” that are played in high school or college really count. Dance consist of many different groups and styles. People can dance as a hobby, a serious passion, or you can dance as a career, teacher or participant. Also, many people don’t give recognition to the dancers who participate in the competitive dance world. Teams will practice over fifteen hours a week at times in order to perform a seamless and synchronized routine. In the definition of a sport “team competes against another” at a dance competition dancers compete in certain divisions against each other that are categorized by team size, style of dance, and age groups.
Although, sport and dance aren’t categorized together, and dancers are dancers and athletes are athletes, everyone that participates in either one of these activities share qualities that link their identities together. They define dance as creative, expressive art form without winners and losers. Dance is not a sport because of its definition by zeroing on the “art” aspect. To define dance as a competitive sport neglects their contributions, and demeans the art form as a whole. At the highest levels dance is not performed in its competitive form. A dancer might aspire to dance a lead role with the royal ballet, or to dance professionally for a big artist's music video, neither of which involve judges and medals; they are non-competitive. That competitions exist for performers at a lower level is inconsequential; one might as well say spelling is a sport because spelling bees exist
Ballet has been an art form since the late fifteenth century, but society did not truly see the impact of ballet until the nineteenth century. Modern day thinkers possess the idea that ballet began with tutus and pointe shoes, but it wasn’t until the nineteenth century that this opinion was observed. Ballet has come a long way. By universal definition, "sport" is listed as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.

Dancers often times have many pressures put on them, which can lead to physical and emotional damage. These damages occur through the pressures from the media, parents, teammates, and the stereotype that society has placed on dancers. One of the hardest pressures that dancers have to overcome is the pressure from the media. The media places harsh, rigid, and false ideas of dancers on to the mass public. There are kids and students, even from a young age, who are told by their parents that they have to play a sport. These parents find it important that their kids be involved in some type of physical activity, and it is. So a little girl thinks taking a dance class would be interesting and that she would be able to please her parents by this choice of sport. But when she comes to tell them what sport she would like to take up, they tell her dance is not a sport. Yes, it requires physical activity, such as stretching, they go through 12 hours of dancing a day if they are professional dancers. If the courts were to rule cheerleading as a sport, how would they go about it? Should all-star and school cheerleading be voted a sport? Should none of it? The answer to this is all-star cheerleading should be ruled as not only a sport, but also as a varsity sport. Competitive and collegiate cheerleading should be ruled as a sport because of the danger, the rigor and the popularity that this athletic activity demands.
