FIGUEROA’S FRAMEWORK IN RELATION TO DANCE Established by Professor Peter Figueroa, Figueroa’s framework is a tool used to investigate opinions and concepts surrounding access to sport[1]. It also focuses on equality and equity within the sociology of sport and the copious advantages and disadvantages that different people may have relating to sport. The framework consists of five levels which are the individual, interpersonal, institutional, cultural and structural. Not all people have the same opportunities to participate in sport or any physical activity due to a number of factors some of which will be outlined in this essay. It is divided into five main sublevels, personal temperament, genetic predisposition, self-concept and self-esteem, personal beliefs, values, attitudes and stereotypes and individual needs. Personal temperament identifies one of four personality types that every person fits into, they often determine a person’s temperament, but aren’t set rules for how people should act or behave. They frequently give a good idea of how a certain person will feel towards sport, and if they will or won’t participate. The first of the four personality types are extraversion-introversion. I believe I am more on the introverted side as I don’t like to put myself out there to be a leader, and I prefer individual activities. Within dance I used to do solo routines because I don’t feel as though I must rely on others and prefer not to be in large groups. Ballet was great for me as it is very independent and you are your own leader. The next two personality types are sensing-intuition and thinking-feeling, I sit mostly on the intuitive side as I choose to look at dance as a whole experience. Sensing is for those people who need concrete information like steps and instructions. I prefer to go with the flow of the music and let my subconscious mind make up the dance moves. The way these beliefs and values manifest as attitudes, behaviours and stereotypes can affect the choice to engage in sports. Socialisation of an individual influences these beliefs and values in all factors of life. I have grown up in a family that encourages any kind of sport. I believe dancing is a way to get fit and have fun, meaning I am happy to participate and in anything physical. On any social media there are always photos of very fit athletes and although it sets an unrealistic body representation for young adults, I believe it is those photos which drive us to perform at our best. Jose’ and Mr Camp have persuaded us to believe in ourselves which has really improved my personal beliefs that I can do salsa. Believing in myself encourages me to participate in
